Riche Mensah, CEO of Lynx Entertainment.

Songwriter and record label owner, Richie Mensah, has finally reacted to reports;of a lawsuit against his record label signee Kuami Eugene.

This follows reports of a Nigerian artist, Ottomi Patrick Akhere;who is popularly known as Oduma Essan suing Kuami Eugene for allegedly stealing his song.

Responding to this news, the CEO of Lynx Entertainment, Richie Mensah;blamed some bloggers for labeling Kuami Eugene as a “lazy songwriter”.

According to Richie, this is alerting foreigners to sue the young ‘Rockstar’ anytime a line or concept accidentally collides with theirs .

Richie Mensah also issued a stern warning to bloggers and media houses who tarnish the image of the 24-year-old singer to desist from such acts. He also chided some bloggers and media houses who jump to conclusions without doing any form of research first.

Ending his submission, Richie stated that even if Kuami Eugene was sued, “it is none of anyone’s business and the media should stop spreading false news and nonsense”.

Background of the story

It can be recalled that in October 2020, Oduma Essan came out to make some bold claims. He alleged that Kuami Eugene stole his song titled ‘Show-body’.

According to Essan, he sent his music to Lynx Entertainment to feature Dope-nation but they didn’t reply him. They kept him waiting and therefore he decided to “forget about them and release the song alone”. He also claimed that he released his song before Kuami Eugene and he was convinced that Kumai Euge had stolen his song.

“I dropped my song alone, Show-Body by Oduma Essan but I realized Kuami Eugene also dropped the same song on October 9th, 2020, with the same hook, the same title, and some of my lyrics. I believe and I am fully convinced that he stole my song. Where I say ‘show body, body all-girls dey show body’, Kuami Eugene deliberately slowed that part. In the song also where I said ‘step on the dance floor’, Kuami Eugene used the same words”.

Oduma Essan stated that he inspired and is the originator of the song but Kuami Eugene stole his intellectual property which is not right.

Oduma Essan sues Kuami Egene

Well, months have passed and the Nigerian artist is now dragging Kuami Eugene to court according to some reports.

Oduma Essan claims that he spent a lot of money on the production of his song and the promotion of the song in both Ghana and Nigeria.  He claims Kuami Eugene “plagiarised” the title and his lyrics and visual imagery. He is requesting GHc 120,000 for damages for the costs of his video production, sound engineering, mixing, and promotion of the songs.

That notwithstanding, Kuami Eugene is known for sampling old songs of other people for his own songs. He has a few songs and acapella sampled from the songs from other artists. He has explained that the sampling of other’s songs is the inspiration he gets from these songs.
