Swerving Question About Taxes Introduced By The Akufo-Addo Gov’t

Dr. Kwaku Oteng

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Angel Group of Companies, Dr. Kwaku Oteng, refused to comment on the government’s numerous levies that are being introduced amid the country’s hardship.

According to the owner of the Angel Broadcasting Network, he is not into politics so it would be difficult for him to respond to issues that could affect his personality and his business.

When questioned about the various taxes implemented by the Akuffo-Addo-led administration, Dr. Oteng requested that the journalist from his radio station permit him to skip the question to steer clear of any potential controversy.

Dr. Oteng noted that there would be a “bombshell” if he decided to comment on the taxes introduced by the government, adding that the question should pass him by with due respect.

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government led by President Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo-Addohas come under intense scrutiny and criticism recently after the introduction of taxes that some sections of the public consider a nuisance.

Taxes including the electronic levy (E-levy) and the recent emission levy have led to a barrage of backlash that is directed at the government for exacerbating the plight of Ghanaians.

The government and the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) commenced the collection of the Emission Levy Act, 2023 (Act 112) which was imposed on vehicles in the country.

The tax measure, which was passed by parliament in December 2023, seeks to impose a levy on carbon dioxide equivalent emissions on internal combustion engine vehicles.

The levy forms part of government efforts aimed at tackling greenhouse gas emissions while promoting environmental and eco-friendly technologies to achieve net zero targets.

For instance, users of motorcycles and tricycles are required to pay GH¢75 per annum for the levy.

Motor vehicles, buses, and coaches which are up to 3000 cc will pay GH¢150 per annum, while motor vehicles, buses, and coaches above 3000 cc, cargo trucks, and articulated trucks will pay GH¢300 per annum.

Recounting An Experience During The Festive Season

Dr. Kwaku Oteng has recounted an experience he had when he took a foreign alcoholic drink some time ago.

Narrating what happened, Dr. Kwaku Oteng stated that during the Christmas festivities on January 1, 2024, he took a foreign alcoholic drink when he decided to go out and have some fun.

He disclosed that he experienced a hangover for one month and was not able to recover within that period, adding that he regretted deciding to opt for that particular alcoholic drink which he didn’t mention its name.

“On January 1, I decided to go out and have some fun. I took one alcoholic beverage that I cannot mention the brand in order not to mar their brand. I experienced a hangover for one month and I was not able to recover. So I questioned myself because I made the mistake of taking something different,” he recounted.

In other news, Dr. Kwaku Oteng has warned Kevin Taylor to stop attacking him because he’s not responsible for what his presenters say when they’re on air.

Dr. Oteng noted that he has no say over what his on-air talent says in their broadcasts.

The owner of the Angel Broadcasting Network revealed that the only interference he can have is telling them not to be too negative when speaking on certain issues or certain people but other than that everyone has free reign to do their jobs.

He therefore begged staunch critics like Kevin Taylor and others to relax a bit for him since he’s not responsible for the utterances of his reporters.

His complaints come after Taylor ran a campaign against him sometime last year in anger over comments passed by Nana Yaa Brefo on Angel.

According to Dr Oteng, it’s not his fault.
