Award-winning Ghanaian music duo, DopeNation have disclosed that under no circumstances will they endorse any political party.
Speaking in an interview, they explained that their brand represents a nation that cuts through multiple political ideologies, therefore, taking a stance in politics will have adverse affect it.
“First and foremost, we don’t do politics, because our fans are from different sides… We’d rather go hungry than endorse a political party. We are doing music for everybody; we don’t want to be on one side”.
They further noted that they wouldn’t want to be in a situation where they are unable to comment on national issues because the party they support is in power. According to them, some celebrities took monies from the political party to campaign in the last election and so are unable to speak up.
“There were a lot of artists who were going in for money to preach to people to vote for a political party…. The whole vibe is the fact that you put yourself up as an ad for a political party, and now that things are becoming worse, you don’t know whether you should go against the political party or not. This is a difficulty we’d rather avoid”.
DopeNation shares their views on #Fixthecountry protest
Sharing their thoughts on the Twitter trending hashtag, #Fixthecountry, and counter hashtag #Fixyourself, the duo explained that to be having this conversation at this stage of our national life basically expresses how lost we are as a people.
They further emphasized that Ghana’s first President, Kwame Nkrumah would be disappointed to hear Ghanaians have this conversation today, because, leaders after him have done a poor job at fixing the country.
“We have not been fixed for a long time. If Kwame Nkrumah were to be alive, he would have gotten a cane to lash us. There is a lot we have lost our way as black people… and it reflects in our lifestyle. We don’t even eat our own chocolates these days, we don’t consume our own music these days, everything is now foreign… So, why is it that it’s now that we are realizing what has already been lost?”
They added that if the populace is requesting leaders to fix the country and the government is also requesting that the citizens fix themselves, then they both probably need fixing.
