In a surprising move that amplifies the ongoing trend of electrification in the automotive industry, Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the 2025 version of its E53 4Matic+, showcasing a significant power upgrade.
Traditionally known for its robust performance, the latest iteration of the E53 4Matic+ boasts an impressive 576 horsepower under its hood, soaring past its predecessors and even surpassing the power output of the previous-generation Mercedes-AMG E63 S.
Hybrid Powertrain
The 2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 4Matic+ integrates a plug-in hybrid powertrain, which marks a departure from its conventional turbocharged six-cylinder engine.
This new powertrain utilizes the same engine as the GLE53 Hybrid, albeit with a more potent electric motor.
The 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged straight-six engine delivers a peak of 443 horsepower, complemented by an electric motor capable of producing up to 161 horsepower and 352 pound-feet of torque on its own.
With a combined torque peak of 553 pound-feet, the E53 Hybrid demonstrates formidable performance credentials.
AMG stated on its website that “the Mercedes-AMG E53 HYBRID 4Matic+ captivates with an innovative hybrid drive concept, a distinctly luxurious interior, and first-class comfort on long journeys.”
Impressive Acceleration and Efficiency
According to AMG, the E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in a blistering 3.8 seconds when utilizing the Race Start mode, showcasing its remarkable agility and responsiveness.
Moreover, incorporating a 21.2-kWh 400-volt battery pack ensures meaningful electrical range, with European models targeting a WLTP rating of 62 miles.
The EPA numbers are expected to translate to over 40 miles of EV range, allowing for environmentally conscious driving experiences.
Efficient Charging and Driving Modes
The E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ offers enhanced convenience with its efficient charging capabilities, including the option for 60-kW DC fast-charging, enabling rapid charging from 10 to 80 percent in just 20 minutes.
Additionally, the hybrid system introduces two new driving modes: Electric mode, which prioritizes EV driving until the battery depletes, and Battery Hold mode, preserving charge for later use.
Notably, the E53 Hybrid incorporates a haptic throttle pedal that stiffens to indicate maximum performance delivery during electric driving.
“For the first time, you can drive longer distances fully electrically and locally emission-free with a performance hybrid from Mercedes-AMG”.
Aesthetics and Interior
Visually, the E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ exudes a muscular stance, featuring a distinctive radiator grille with AMG’s signature vertical strakes and illuminated surround.
AMG stated, “The muscular silhouette with its sweeping fender extensions enhances the already sporty design and leads to a powerful rear section.”
The widened front fenders and quad tailpipes further accentuate its athletic appeal. Inside, subtle enhancements include discreet AMG branding and updated graphics for the instrument panel.
European buyers can opt for the Superscreen configuration, while U.S. specifications remain pending.
Technological Advancements
The E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ retains its steering column gear selector wand. It introduces multifunctional gearchange paddles, allowing drivers to select ratios in dynamic modes and adjust regenerative braking levels during electric driving.
Hardware improvements encompass double-valve active dampers, rear-wheel steering, and reinforced body shell for enhanced stiffness and agility.
Availability and Pricing
While deliveries to the U.S. are scheduled for the third quarter of 2024, pricing details have yet to be disclosed.
However, AMG hints at a modest increase in pricing compared to the previous model, reflecting the significant enhancements and technological advancements offered by the 2025 E53 Hybrid 4Matic+.
As Mercedes-AMG continues to push the boundaries of performance and electrification, the 2025 E53 Hybrid 4Matic+ emerges as a formidable contender, combining unparalleled power with environmental consciousness, and setting a new standard for luxury performance vehicles.
