A National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate elect for South Tongu, Maxwell Lukutor, has revealed that flagbearer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia will be no match for the NDC flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama in the north during the 2024 election.
According to him, although both men hail from the north, Dr Bawumia has dashed the hopes of Ghanaians despite offering a promising and progressive economy. To this end, he indicated that Ghana has interesting times ahead, especially with the coming on board of Dr Bawumia as the leader of the NPP.
Mr Lukutor revealed that he is aware Dr Bawumia is a technocrat and also carried a lot of people along especially with most of the theories he propounded and “people thought that he was going to do something extraordinary”.
Nonetheless, he stated that Ghanaians were disappointed in him because after seven years, he’s not been able to turn the fortunes of the economy around.

“So, for me, they say when a toad dies you see the full length, so, we have now seen the full length of Dr Bawumia. We know John Dramani Mahama has been an assemblyman, a minister, a Vice President, a President and now staging a comeback. We have now seen what the two of them can do.
“We’ll see the real show at the North. I’m not sure that Dr Bawumia will be able to hold on to anything significant this time round as against the candidature of John Dramani Mahama to be able to cause an upset at the Northern region.”

Impact of Bawumia in the North
Despite emphasizing the loss of Dr Bawumia in the north during the December 7 election, Mr Lukutor congratulated the NPP for voting overwhelmingly during the primaries.
He insisted that the votes he got were very significant and it was a clear statement made from the north that they would go for their own.
That notwithstanding, commenting on the 61.43% votes garnered by the Vice President, Mr Lukutor expressed that such a figure should be a source of concern for Dr Bawumia and his team.
This, he explained, is because Dr Bawumia has not brought to bear the overwhelming significance people thought that he was going to bring on the NPP.
“It is the true color of him that we have seen now. Hitherto, he would have been seen as a saint and people would have been hailing him, but now, most of us know who he is so he doesn’t carry the weight that we thought he had. So, for me, he against JDM at the northern part of the country, I’m not sure he’ll be able to show his might so much against him.
“I believe that the eight years that he’s had as a Vice President has brought so much, especially that he is now [restricted] from being an economic wizkid to a digitalization expert. It means that the fire was too hot for him, and he had to leave the kitchen.”

In anticipation of the 2024 general election, Mr Lukutor lauded the great chances of the NDC winning the elections. He noted that the NPP has over the period disappointed Ghanaians through failed promises.
“Anybody who thinks the 2024 election is going to be a walkover for NDC should be a joker, but of course, at the end of the day I know that definitely we are going to win as a party. Yes, Bawumia has brought in a lot of votes for the NPP in the northern part of the country because then we didn’t really know who he was… So, he wouldn’t be able to cause an upset like he used to do in the past…”
