The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ningo Prampram constituency, Samuel Nartey George, has described Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia’s, address during the official launch of his Presidential bid on Wednesday 7th February at the University of Professional Studies Accra as an act of impertinence.

Mr. Samuel George made this remark in response to the Vice President’s statement that he is a mere ‘mate’ to the President, H.E Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo, a comment that provoked countless adverse comments from remarkable public figures.

Consequently, the MP for Ningo Prampram asserted that, the Vice President’s attempt to diminish his role in the Akufo-Addo administration which resulted in the startling state of the country’s economy, is an insult to Ghanaians who have the capability to think for themselves. He claimed that the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer has the lowest form of regard for the intelligence of Ghanaians.

Additionally, Mr. Samuel George declared that if the Vice President has had any regard to the woes of the people of Ghana, Dr. Bawumia would not have disrespected Ghanaians in the manner in which he had in presenting his plans for the future in his ‘Bold Solution for the Future’ address to the nation.

Furthermore, the avid Member of Parliament emphasized that the Vice President is not a ‘mate’ to the driver but an assistant driver. He accentuated that Dr. Bawumia is not a servant to the President as a mate is to a driver but an assistant to the President and therefore shares in decision making and should also share in the consequences of decisions he assisted the President to make.

Accordingly, Mr. Samuel George claimed that the role of the Vice President as stipulated in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana does not make the Office of the Vice President a position of a mate. He stated that the duties of the Vice President are clear-cut and cannot be diminished for political gains as the Vice President has attempted to do in his address.

The Vice President Is Dishonest; His Words Do Not Agree With His Actions

Also, the Ningo Prampram MP stated that the Vice President’s claim was an attempt to deceive Ghanaians. He accused the Vice President of being dishonest as his words do not agree with his actions – referring to the Vice President’s promise of economic growth to Ghanaians prior the New Patriotic Party’s victory in the 2016 polls and its subsequent win in the 2020 elections.  “…a man’s word is as important as the value of his credibility”, the Ningo Prampram MP stated.

More so, Mr. Samuel George who is a keen critic of the ruling New Patriotic Party, especially the President and the Vice President, stated that he agrees with Dr. Justice Srem-Sai stance that, the Vice President’s statement should be corrected before it becomes a recognized phenomenon in Ghana’s political sphere. He argued that the Vice President has the same qualifications as the President and should equally take responsibility for the collective mistakes of the government.

Likewise, the Member of Parliament described the address of the Vice President as a ridiculous spectacle of a kind that has never been witnessed in the country’s political history since the inception of the Fourth Republic. He stated that lying and downgrading his position to the lowest level possible must be the most laughable political incident in the country.

Conclusively, the Vice President has come under several attacks with regards to his address to the nation on Wednesday 7th February 2024, during his Presidential bid launch at the University of Professional Studies Accra. The Vice President has since been accused of betraying his party and attempting to absolve himself of the role he played in the country’s economic status quo. Moreover, other critics are of the view that the Vice President’s attempt at a rebrand is impractical – a move he should not have attempted.
