The former Member of Parliament for Bongo Constituency and Co-Spokesperson of the NDC Manifesto Committee on Energy, Hon. Edward Abambire Bawa has been appointed as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC).
This appointment, effective January 17, 2025, was made by His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, in line with Article 195(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 10(2) of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation Act, 1983 (P.N.D.CL64).
A letter signed by Dr Callistus Mahama, Executive Secretary to the President, confirmed the appointment, stating that it is pending “receipt of the required advice of the Honourable Minister for Energy, in consultation with the Public Services Commission”.
The letter emphasized the President’s confidence in Hon. Bawa’s capabilities, extending formal congratulations and best wishes for his tenure. Hon. Edward Abambire Bawa is a seasoned politician and energy sector expert, renowned for his extensive experience and leadership.
He represented the Bongo Constituency in the Upper East Region as a Member of Parliament in both the Seventh and Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic of Ghana under the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
During his tenure in Parliament, Bawa was a prominent member of the Mines and Energy Committee, providing critical oversight and strategic insights into Ghana’s burgeoning energy sector.
Additionally, he served on the Poverty Reduction Strategy Committee in the Seventh Parliament, further highlighting his commitment to socioeconomic development.

Hon. Bawa’s professional background includes a distinguished career as the Head of Communication for the World Bank-funded Oil and Gas Capacity Building Project at the Ministry of Petroleum in Accra.
This role saw him spearheading strategic communication initiatives to enhance capacity and transparency in Ghana’s oil and gas sector.
Hon. Bawa’s appointment comes at a critical juncture for the GNPC, as the corporation is tasked with advancing Ghana’s energy ambitions amid global transitions toward sustainable energy.
His deep understanding of the energy sector, combined with his experience in governance and public service, positions him as a pivotal figure in steering GNPC toward achieving its strategic goals.
The GNPC plays a central role in Ghana’s economy, managing petroleum resources and driving investments in the oil and gas sector.
Hon. Bawa’s immediate tasks are expected to include fostering collaboration with international energy partners, enhancing local capacity in the petroleum industry, and advancing the government’s green energy transition agenda.
His appointment underscores the Mahama administration’s focus on leveraging experienced leadership to navigate the evolving challenges and opportunities within the energy sector.
