The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced a series of crucial decisions aimed at reinforcing party discipline, ensuring unity ahead of its presidential primaries, and curbing internal breaches of conduct and procedure.

These decisions were reached at a meeting of the National Steering Committee, signalling the party’s renewed commitment to maintaining cohesion and order within its ranks as it prepares for a competitive internal presidential contest.

One of the central outcomes of the meeting is the party’s plan to officially invite all individuals who have so far publicly declared their intentions to contest in the upcoming NPP presidential primaries.

These aspirants are to meet jointly with the National Steering Committee and the National Council of Elders on Thursday, July 3, 2025.

According to a statement signed by the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the meeting is expected to focus on matters of mutual interest and provide a platform for fostering harmony among the various presidential hopefuls.

The move is seen as an effort to prevent early tensions and factionalism from derailing the party’s cohesion ahead of the flagbearer race.

As the party prepares for the post-Akufo-Addo era, several prominent figures within the NPP have begun making public declarations and subtle campaigns, prompting concerns over premature jostling and its potential to spark internal divisions.

Bono Regional Chairman Referred to Disciplinary Committee

In a development that underscores the party’s resolve to enforce discipline, the Steering Committee also referred the Bono Regional Chairman, Mr. Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, to the National Disciplinary Committee for violating party directives.

Mr. Baffoe is accused of making unguarded public statements in defiance of clear cautions issued by the National Council.

His comments, which reportedly undermined party guidelines and sowed internal discord, have triggered concerns among top party officials about the need for strict adherence to official communication protocols.

The referral of Abronye to the disciplinary body marks a significant moment in the party’s internal regulatory history.

Known for his controversial and confrontational media engagements, Mr. Baffoe’s actions have on several occasions drawn criticism for allegedly prioritizing personal or factional interests over party cohesion.

This latest action by the Steering Committee sends a strong message that the party’s top leadership will no longer tolerate such behavior, especially during a critical transition period.

Order of Cessation

Further to that, the Steering Committee has directed the immediate cessation of all caucuses or associations of current and former party executives, as well as government appointees, who have been holding private meetings with presidential aspirants in breach of party regulations.

These gatherings, often seen as avenues for strategic alignments and covert campaign planning, have raised concerns about uneven playing fields and early factionalism that could damage the party’s unity and public image.

The party has reiterated its call for all members to respect the spirit and letter of the party’s constitution.

“The Party wishes to once again remind members of their constitutional obligation to protect party unity, to abide by and publicly support the Party’s decisions, and to refrain from engaging in acts that threaten party cohesion.”

The current approach by the Steering Committee reflects a conscious effort to balance openness and internal competition with order and collective responsibility.

The General Secretary’s communication underscores the party’s desire to build a stable and transparent process for selecting its next flagbearer.

The July 3 meeting is widely expected to serve as a pivotal forum for aligning aspirants with party expectations, fostering a spirit of comradeship, and preventing potential ruptures that might arise from an overly aggressive or fragmented campaign atmosphere.
