Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President and flagbearer hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has forewarned party delegates not to support anyone running for President who claims to be wealthier than others.
Dr. Bawumia argued that he should be chosen to lead the party because he has more experience than any of his rivals in the Presidential election, while he spoke to delegates as he toured the Ashanti Region. He asserted that the contest is about policies, not wealth.
Taking pride in his accomplishments, the Vice President claimed that John Dramani Mahama cannot be defeated in the 2024 election by any other strategist, except himself.
“We want someone who can claim power for us in 2024 not just anybody. If it’s just about a flagbearer, I think anybody would qualify. We want a selfless person and not a rich man because you won’t rule the country with your money if you become President. We want someone with ideas.
“Among all the 10 presidential aspirants, I have political experience over all of them. I know how to campaign and win elections over the NDC and John Mahama in particular. I have defeated him twice and I know how to defeat him again in 2024.”

According to him, he is confident in his ability to make sure the party can “break the 8.” As a result, the Vice President pushed the delegates to support him heavily in the primary elections. In his opinion, he is the best contender to defeat the flagbearer of the NDC.
“As we go for the Presidential primaries, we need someone who can help us retain. We need a selfless leader to lead the party and not a richer man. We need someone who has humility. We need someone who has a track record. We need someone who has the temperament. We need someone who has innovative ideas and has tolerance for everyone.”

All 10 candidates running to be the New Patriotic Party’s Presidential nominee in the 2024 elections have already been approved by the vetting committee for the presidential primary.
No Group Against Bawumia Formed
Boakye Agyarko, a flagbearer hopeful for the NPP, refuted rumors that he and eight other Presidential contenders have united to oppose Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
He asserted that because Dr. Bawumia has the support of numerous NPP leaders and government appointees, he is the “establishment” candidate in the contest.
“That is not what I said. I never said that we’ve ganged up against anyone, it’s unnecessary. I was asked if there was an establishment candidate, meaning a candidate the Jubilee House and everyone supports, and I replied in the affirmative, that indeed that candidate was Vice President Bawumia.
“I was further asked in case there was a runoff, will other candidates including myself come together to back the candidate contesting the establishment candidate? Remember when we talk about a run-off, only two aspirants contest, the establishment candidate and the non-establishment candidate. I explained that we have no such conversations.”

Despite being rivals, according to the former Energy Minister, all the candidates have friendly relationships. He continued, “I said there was a possibility that all the eight aspirants will support the non-establishment candidate.”
