Professor Ransford Gyampo, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has cautioned the New Patriotic Party not to undermine the resignation from the party by Mr Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, a former minister of trade and industry to contest as an independent candidate in the 2024 General Elections.
The President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana- University of Ghana Chapter believes Mr Kyerematen’s decision to resign from the party would undermine the party’s chances of breaking the eight.
According to Professor Gyampo Mr Alan Kyerematen’s independent candidature would change the voting pattern in the 2024 General Elections. He believes a significant number of Ghanaian voters will prioritize substance when voting, a situation he argued could favour Mr Alan Kyerematen as he has demonstrated competence in the past.
“In the voice of Kennedy Agyapong Alan is going to give a showdown in 2024. He will give the New Patriotic Party and National Democratic Congress a run for their money”
Professor Gyampo
Alan’s Resignation Was Imminent
Professor Ransford Van Gyampo further argued that the resignation of Mr. Alan Kyerematen was bound to happen due to the failure of the leadership of the party to have put mechanisms in place to address concerns that emerged aftermath of the party’s Special Delegate Congress on August 26 2023.
According to the Political Scientist, the inability of the party to resolve the issues brought up by Mr Alan Kyerematen and other candidates is what has accounted for the latter’s resignation from the New Patriotic Party to contest as an independent candidate.
“When we said these things, there were some foot soldiers who have eaten and their bellies are full who were going about saying all manner of rubbish but the point is that we do scientific research and analysis to give predictions with a high level of certainty. So the fact that I teach Political Science does not mean I am a politician. We told them to put their house together but they will not listen”
Professor Gyampo
Professor Gyampo indicated that Mr. Alan Kyerematen’s decision to resign from the party and contest as an independent candidate in the 2024 General Elections is final and there is no way he is going to rescind such a decision.
According to Prof Gyampo any political party that has its base already must consolidate to help it to retain or win power. He believes the inability of any political party to consolidate its base would suffer severely in an election.
He therefore stressed that the resignation of Mr. Alan Kyerematen to contest as an independent candidate in the 2024 General Election will severely undermine the chances of the New Patriotic Party in breaking the eight.
“Whether NPP likes or not, Alan would take away some significant number of its supporters. This would not augur well for the party that intends to break the 8. But it does appear the party does not listen just like the government.
Professor Gyampo
As a result, he tasked the party’s leadership with moving more quickly to solve the issues Mr Alan Kyerematen and other candidates had brought up following the party’s Special Delegate Conference.
Professor Gyampo also admonished the New Patriotic Party as a political party to close its ranks and ensure that even the November 4 election would be held in a manner that will not bring more division in the party.
He believes failure on the part of the party leadership to act with caution would lead to another breakaway from the party after the November 4 National Delegate Election.
The former flagbearer aspirant for New Patriotic Party presidential primaries, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen resigned from the New Patriotic Party on Monday, September 25, 2023, and announced a four-point agenda for his bid to contest the 2024 General Elections as an independent presidential candidate.
Announcing his bid for the presidency on Monday, September 25, 2023, Mr Kyerematen, the former Trades and Industry Minister said to actualize his goal as an independent presidential candidate he will establish and lead a new MOVEMENT FOR CHANGE in Ghana.
