Police Assure Public of Peace, Stability Amid Post-Election Tensions

Post-election violence in Ghana is a recurring challenge that threatens the country’s democratic stability and the ongoing violence following the recent elections is no exception. 

This volatile environment demands a proactive and impartial response from the Ghana Police Service to safeguard lives, property, and the integrity of the country’s democracy.

Accordingly, the  Ghana Police Service has assured the public that, in collaboration with other security agencies under the National Election Security Taskforce, it remains committed to ensuring peace and stability in the country.

Through strategic deployments, intelligence gathering, and rapid response measures, they continue to provide security and maintain order, particularly in areas prone to post-election tensions. 

The police noted that this coordinated effort aims to protect lives, safeguard property, and uphold the rule of law during this critical period.

“Over the past 24 hours, there has not been any major security incident across the country. 

“We, urge the public to continue to go about their normal socio-economic activities as the Police continue to implement stringent security measures to ensure their safety and protect their properties”.

The Ghana Police Service has further assured the public that all 123 individuals arrested so far are being subjected to due legal process.

This includes thorough investigations, evidence gathering, and adherence to the rule of law to ensure accountability and justice.

According to the police of the total number of suspects, 49 have been processed and arraigned before the court.

GPS indicated that out of these, 16 have been granted bail, while 33 have been remanded into police and prison custody, pending their next court appearances on specified dates. 

The police reaffirmed their commitment to handling the cases with fairness and transparency, urging the public to remain calm and respect the judicial process.

The police disclosed that, in addition, 70 suspects have been granted Police Inquiry Bail in accordance with the constitutional mandate to process suspects for court within 48 hours. 

This measure ensures that the rights of suspects are upheld while investigations continue. 

The police emphasized their commitment to adhering to legal standards and maintaining transparency throughout the judicial process, assuring the public of their dedication to justice and due process.

Four New Suspects Arrested, Court Appearance Set 

 Furthermore, the Ghana Police Service disclosed that four additional suspects, who were arrested within the past 24 hours, are currently in police custody. 

These individuals are expected to be arraigned before the court today, 13th December 2024, in line with legal procedures aimed at ensuring timely justice.

The police further noted that they are working closely with the Office of the Attorney General on these cases. 

This collaboration is intended to strengthen the legal process, ensure proper prosecution, and reinforce accountability.

The police reassured the public of their commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining transparency throughout the judicial process.

“With regards to the incident involving the whereabouts of the Efutu National Democratic Congress (NDC) Constituency 2nd Vice-Chairman, Mr Abraham Ato Anan, we wish to state that the chairman is in good health and with his family and in contact with the Police.

“We, therefore, urge the public to disregard the misinformation and disinformation regarding his whereabouts”.

Accordingly , the police have assured the public of their unwavering commitment to maintaining peace, security, law, and order across the country. 

They emphasized that all necessary measures are being taken to prevent unrest, protect lives and property, and uphold the rule of law. 

The police also reiterated their dedication to impartiality and professionalism in handling security matters, especially in the wake of post-election tensions. 

Their efforts aim to foster public confidence and ensure a stable and peaceful environment for all citizens.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Police Service must rise to the occasion and assert its role as the custodian of public order. 

Their response to post-election violence will shape public confidence in Ghana’s democracy.
