President Akufo-Addo Congratulates Commonwealth Secretary-General Elect, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has proudly congratulated Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway on her historic election as the 7th Secretary-General of the Commonwealth.

According to the President, this monumental accomplishment marks the first time a Ghanaian has been elected to this distinguished role, a testament to Hon. Botchway’s exceptional capabilities and Ghana’s growing prominence and respect within the global community.

Addressing the occasion with a deep sense of pride, President Akufo-Addo lauded Hon. Ayorkor Botchway’s dedication, resilience, and distinguished service in both national and international arenas.

President Akufo-Addo further pointed out that Hon. Ayorkor Botchway’s selection speaks to the strength of her character and her dedication to service, as well as to the esteem in which Ghana, is held amongst her peers.

President Akufo-Addo also added that Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway known for her diplomatic acumen, has been instrumental in strengthening Ghana’s ties on the global stage, championing African interests, and advocating for initiatives that bridge divides and encourage mutual understanding.

Her inclusive vision and dedication to partnership-building according to President Akufo-Addo are expected to be key assets as she leads the Commonwealth into a new era of unity and resilience.

President Akufo-Addo also acknowledged the strong support Hon. Ayorkor Botchway received from fellow Heads of State and Government, expressing gratitude for their confidence in Ghana’s candidate.

He noted that her election reflects a shared commitment across the Commonwealth to uphold the principles of democracy, good governance, and international cooperation, values that Hon. Ayorkor Botchway has ardently championed.

“In choosing her, you have placed your trust in a passionate advocate for our shared values,” the President affirmed, highlighting his confidence in her ability to strengthen the Commonwealth and enhance its role as a global platform for cooperation and peace.

In his remarks, President Akufo-Addo extended his warmest regards and gratitude to the outgoing Secretary-General, Rt. Hon. Patricia Scotland, KC, recognizing her years of outstanding service.

He praised her for her invaluable contributions to the Commonwealth and its member states, wishing her continued success in her future endeavours.

President Akufo-Addo also expressed appreciation to Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa and the people of Samoa for hosting the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) with exceptional hospitality.

The gathering brought together leaders from across the Commonwealth, underscoring the continued importance of fostering connections between diverse cultures and perspectives.

As Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway steps into her new role, President Akufo-Addo pledged Ghana’s unwavering support, along with the anticipation of an inspired Commonwealth future.

“We all look forward to the brighter, more resilient Commonwealth that she will help to build, one rooted in the values we cherish,” he affirmed, conveying the enthusiasm shared by Ghanaians for Ayorkor Botchway’s vision and leadership.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, was elected secretary-general of the Commonwealth at the 27th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) held in Apia, Samoa.

The election took place amid significant anticipation, as Hon. Botchwey competed against two other strong African candidates: Lesotho’s former trade minister Joshua Phoho Setipa and Gambia’s Foreign Minister Mamadou Tangara.

Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway’s election as Secretary-General signifies a profound milestone for Ghana and a promising chapter for the Commonwealth, as she prepares to guide the association toward strengthened unity, inclusivity, and prosperity.
