Private legal Practitioner, Martin Kpebu is called out President Akufo-Addo on his inability to fulfill most of the promises assured Ghanaians during his run for the presidency.
Mr. Kpebu described it as discouraging for the president to sit inactively on assurances he made towards Ghanaians for the period he’s been in office.
His criticism comes on the back of Ghana’s ranking 72nd in the 2022 edition of the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) report issued on Tuesday, January 31. Ghana still sits in the back with no progress on the CPI score consecutively for three years now, after details indicate that the country scored 43 out of 100 per Transparency International (TI) score.
It is for this that, Mr. Kpebu believes the President has little or no intention to curb corruption as demonstrated by the CPI score. Speaking on Newfile on Joy TV, Mr. Kpebu recounted 18 pledges made by his Excellency, as a reminder to him that Ghanaians have not forgotten.
“Let me mention some of the notable things Akufo-Addo said, which today he has not lived up to, and he thinks we have forgotten. He needs a quick reminder that this thing has to stop,”
Martin Kpebu
The Pledges
Mr. Kpebu lists most the pledges that the president made to the Ghanaian masses before and during his term of presidency and has poorly made any progress towards.
“I shall protect the public purse, I’m too old to steal your money; I have my money already, ‘Ye te sika so, nso ekom de yen,’Try me and see, I’m not corrupt, and will never be corrupt, I can develop Ghana without borrowing money from anywhere; the money is here, I will transform Ghana in 18 months, I will not operate a family and friends government, I will fight corruption with the Anas principle, I will make the Korle lagoon and the Odo river a tourist site, I will build a factory in every district. I will give each constituency GH¢1 million every year, I will arrest the dollar, the hike in fuel prices will be a thing of the past, I will make Accra the cleanest city in Africa, I will build 111 hospitals, 350 schools.”
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo
The most talked about assurance he made to the citizenry was, “we will never go to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a bail-out.”
Mr. Kpebu brings to our understanding that when the statements made by the President are carefully looked at, it is realized that He did not hold himself by his word and let thing run amiss.
This is because the public purse as at now is being misused, The president still uses the money of tax payers in private ventures such as getting a private plane with a private bathroom in it even if he states that he has his own money, the presidency claimed not to be corrupt but in recent times, the country has been corrupt more than ever.
The country is at the necks of the IMF for money when the president promised not to take money from them and has also been running a “family and friends” government when he vowed not to do so. Accra is still one of the dirtiest places in Africa, the Dollar seems to be playing ‘hide and seek’ with the Cedi, the Korle Lagoon and Odo river has not been transformed into tourists sites whiles fuel prices keep rising and falling as the day goes by.
The country sits on money as said by the President but that money has not been seen in his 7 years of rulership. Additionally, he implored the President to pass an act of Parliament that ensures that appointees of government account for their wealth before leaving office.
