Security Analyst, Muftaw Mumuni Muftaw, has intimated that Ghana will not continue to be immune to terrorists attacks ongoing in surrounding nations.

Muftaw Mumuni admonished government and the various authorities to act fast in that regard to ensure the safety of the citizens and the nation as a whole.

“We’ve seen the northern borders of Togo and Benin, we’ve seen C’ote D’Ivoire, the north and the eastern parts of border points of Burkina Faso falling to extremist attacks. We are the only country that is yet to experience terrorist attacks and we have no reason to believe that we will continue to be immune to that if we do not take adequate measures to prevent that from happening here.”

Muftaw Mumuni Muftaw

Commenting on the report by WACCE which indicated that conflicts in the nation is exposing Ghana to terrorist activities, the security expert noted that many things stated in the report are important factors to look at by government and find immediate solutions to the approaching menace.

“If you look at the local vulnerability, we are looking at the preventive widespread incidences of unresolved chieftaincy conflicts and more dangerously, the situation of cases like Bawku that has been unresolved for a very long time. And we consider the exploitative nature of extremist to take advantage of this vulnerability either to recruit or to launch attacks.”

Muftaw Mumuni Muftaw

Touching on what will provoke terrorists to launch an attack on the country, he insinuated that extremists and terrorists engage in violence that is intended to provoke some state actors indicating that such instances can motivate them. “Violence driven along ethnic or religious lines are mostly for power, territories and ideologies.”

According to him, unique situations occur where the extremists can use ideologies as tools to be able to get government to respond to their grievances. “If you look at the Sahel regions, it [terrorism] is originally driven by religious ideologies and what we have seen so far is violence that weaponizes the population. On the basis of that, we could be targeted for that.”

“Our West African region has a huge potential which we could harness under a peaceful environment to enhance the wellbeing of our citizens. Unfortunately, the ECOWAS region is saddled with the unpleasant reputation as one of the most dangerous regions in recent times. The constantly evolving terrorist threats in our region even makes it more worrisome.”

Seth Amoah expressed hope that the sub regions will continue to support its shared decisions and actions particularly in ensuring a formidable joint force that is well-trained, well motivated with the requisite capacity and logistics to deal with the insecurity challenges within the region.
