Zongo Chiefs Stress Peaceful Electoral Participation

The Council of Zongo Chiefs in the Ashanti Region has urged political actors to maintain calm and uphold democratic processes as the December elections approach.

In anticipation of the December 7, 2024, general elections, the Council underscored the importance of all political parties and their supporters maintaining peace and respecting electoral processes throughout the period.

The Council emphasized that peaceful elections are essential to preserving Ghana’s stability and democratic values.

“This year’s elections mark the country’s ninth general elections since the beginning of the Fourth Republic in 1992.

“It is therefore crucial for all political actors to understand that the foundation of a thriving democracy lies in peaceful coexistence and respect for the electoral system”.

In a statement, the Council further urged political parties to actively educate their supporters on the importance of peaceful participation in the electoral process.

The Council emphasized that a stable democratic environment relies on the restraint and cooperation of all involved.

Accordingly, the Zongo Chiefs encouraged political leaders to lead by example, fostering respectful, constructive dialogue and avoiding any actions or rhetoric that could incite violence or coercion.

The statement indicated that setting a positive tone allows political parties to contribute to a credible election outcome that accurately reflects the collective will of the people and bolsters Ghana’s democratic foundation.

The Council also noted that Ghana’s history is characterized by successful peaceful elections and democratic transitions, establishing a standard for other nations to emulate.

These achievements, the Council noted, reflect the resilience and commitment of Ghanaians to uphold democratic values.

Consequently, the Zongo Chief emphasized that it is the responsibility of every citizen to protect this legacy by fostering unity and understanding among the country’s diverse cultural, religious, and political groups.

The Council asserted that promoting dialogue and collaboration among these groups not only strengthens national cohesion but also reinforces the foundations of democracy, ensuring that future generations inherit a stable and prosperous society.

Council Urged Commitment to Dialogue

Furthermore, the Council of Zongo Chiefs called for the public to embrace a commitment to fostering a culture of tolerance and dialogue in the spirit of democracy.

According to the Council, this commitment is vital to ensuring that the upcoming elections are conducted peacefully and transparently.

By embracing tolerance, citizens can create an environment where differing opinions are respected and constructive discussions can take place.

The statement indicated that engaging in open dialogue not only strengthens relationships among communities but also builds trust in the electoral process.

The Council believes that a unified effort to promote these values will lead to a more inclusive and democratic atmosphere, ultimately enhancing the legitimacy of the elections and contributing to national stability.

“The Council thus advises Political Parties, Civil Society Organizations, and the media at large to actively collaborate with the Electoral Commission (EC) when they encounter problems and strive in good faith to establish agreement on the way forward”.

The Council also urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to take the lead in fostering collaborative efforts with various stakeholders, including political parties, civil society organizations, and community groups.

According to the Council, actively seeking out these partnerships aids the EC in creating a more inclusive electoral process that reflects the diverse perspectives within the country.

Additionally, the Council emphasized the importance of remaining open to constructive criticism and suggestions from all quarters.

Such receptiveness not only helps to identify potential areas for improvement but also strengthens public trust in the EC’s ability to conduct free and fair elections.

The Council asserted that these initiatives can ultimately enhance the overall integrity of the electoral process and contribute to a robust democratic environment in Ghana. “Together, we can uphold the values of democracy and secure a bright future for Ghana”.
