Sudan's younger generation stands at the risk of been wiped out.

Sudan's younger generation stands at the risk of been wiped out.

According to UN’s head of humanitarian affairs and emergency relief coordinator, Martin Griffiths, Sudan stands at a very high risk of being wiped out of its citizens.

The UN official claimed that, hundreds of thousands of Sudanese children stand at the point of Dying due to malnutrition.

“The war in Sudan is fueling a humanitarian emergency of epic proportions. The viral conflict and the hunger, disease and displacement left in its wake now threatens to consume the entire country.”

Griffiths revealed that, “food stocks have been fully depleted, as clashes and road blockages prevented aid workers from reaching the hungry” ones stuck in the South Kordofan town of Kadugli.

He also raised worries regarding the security of civilians in the eastern city of Al Jazira. Mr. Griffiths emphasized that, the conflict is gradually moving towards “Sudan’s breadbasket,” as it descends further into the country’s biggest wheat production.

Data from the United Nations implied that, over 4.6 million civilians have fled the country. Other data also claimed that, over 5,000 people have been killed along the way, since the conflict began in mid-April.

“The longer the fighting continues, the more devastating its impact. Some places have already run out of food. Hundreds of thousands of children are severely malnourished and at imminent risk of death if left untreated.”

The conflict, according to Mr. Griffiths, has “decimated” Sudan’s healthcare industry. According to the World Health Organization, as at May 31, the war had rendered over 67% of major medical facilities in Sudan, inoperable.

The agency added that, just 29 medical facilities are either full or partially operational but, the facilities stand at the risk of been shut down, due to shortage in personnel, medical logistics, water and electricity.

The WHO cautioned that, cases of dengue, measles, and diarrhea have been reported in many parts of the country. It also emphasized the high prevalence of stunted growth in children.

The UN agency further stated that, it has been forced to cut off many towns from receiving some critical medical attention, including the management of extreme levels of malnutrition among children, and healthcare for pregnant women and lactating mothers.

The Concerns Of UNICEF

Furthermore, UNICEF together with other UN aid groups have expressed worries over the living conditions of Sudan’s younger generation.

“The lethal trifecta of measles, malnutrition, and displacement is putting children’s lives at a very high risk, if urgent action is not taken.”

According to the United Nations’ Children’s Fund, the war has driven out a minimum of over two million Sudanese children from their places of abode. It added that, some of these children have suffered injuries, or perished in crossfires, and many others have been separated from their parents.

The agency additionally expressed concerns over the educational status of the entire younger generation of Sudan, as the war shows no signs of settling down.

Not all, with the ensuing humanitarian catastrophe, looming in refugee camps in Sudan’s neighboring countries, Martin Griffiths has admonished the warring parties to “put the people of Sudan above the pursuit of power or resources.” Griffiths further pleaded to donor agencies and nations to respond swiftly to the crisis, with the attention it deserves.

The UN humanitarian office revealed that, it has only achieved 26% out of the estimated $2.57 billion in aid. The office confirmed that, funding for support initiatives in neighboring countries, hosting Sudanese refugees has accrued 30%.
