UK PM Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murty, arriving in Tokyo ahead of the G7 summit.

Rishi Sunak has warned Vladimir Putin that, Western leaders are “not going away,” as they assembled in Japan for the G7 summit, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, possiblity of attending the summit.

The Prime Minister stated that, “Russia needs to know that we and other countries remain steadfast in our resolve to support Ukraine, not just in the here, and now with the resources it needs to protect itself, but for the long term as well.”

“They can’t just outlast us in this conflict. One of the common topics of conversation I’ll be having and have been having with my fellow leaders is about the longer-term security agreements that we put in place in Ukraine, to deter future Russian aggression,” Sunak averred.

Sunak has made known that, another essence of the G7 is to rally support for Ukraine, particularly among nations that are essentially neutral, such as India. It came as the UK, together with the other G7 nations, including the US, unveiled slew of additional sanctions against Russia.

Sunak, seeking to redeem his international reputation, after a challenging few weeks in domestic politics, also announced sanctions against additional 86 individuals and entities tied to Putin, bringing the overall UK sanctions list to more than 1,500.

Those newly blacklisted are said to be from the Russian “military industrial complex,” as well as individuals active in critical sectors of Russia’s economy including energy, metals, and shipping.

Moreover, the US has also promised additional sanctions, targeted at jeopardizing Russia’s ability to acquire supplies for battlefield, and close flaws used to avoid sanctions. Also, the sanctions have been planned to reduce global dependence on Russian energy, and restricting Moscow’s accessibility to the international financial systems.

US sanctions would also “cut off roughly 70 entities from Russia and other countries from receiving US exports by adding them to the commerce. And There will be upward of 300 new sanctions against individuals, entities, vessels, and aircraft,” the official stated.

Sunak claimed, another objective at the summit, has to do with, increasing pressure on leaders who have taken a more neutral posture on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, especially Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Also, Sunak disclosed that, he sEEKS to emphasize the scale of Russian war crimes to non-G7 leaders such as Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“One thing we have to keep doing is talking to countries like India and also Brazil. That is going to be in that second part of the summit which is a good thing. One of my three things is talking to countries around the world and making sure they realize what is going on, the war crimes Russia is committing inside Ukraine and why everyone should support bringing about a peaceful resolution to the conflict. That’s what Ukraine’s President Zelensky wants, that’s what we want, and putting pressure on Russia to withdraw their forces so we can get to that outcome, that’s the consistent message that I will be taking to countries all around the world.”
