NCA Boss should have been sacked- Elvis Darko

Mr. Elvis Darko, Editor of the Finder newspaper

Mr. Elvis Darko, the editor of the Finder newspaper is suggesting that the head of the National Communications Authority (NCA) should have been sacked following the release of 49 stations to be clamped down. Also

Speaking during a discussion, he explained that it was negligence on the Authority’s part to have allowed these stations operate. Also,

“My first reaction when I saw the list was that the NCA boss should have been sacked. For NCA to sit down for such a number of television stations;to transmit in this country;without authorization from the NCA which is the regulator; This is not one, not two but 49. These are the same stations people have complained about that;their content is reprehensible for many years.”

Elvis Darko

He averred that for this situation to have come about, the Authority was “sleeping on the job”. He said the head of the NCA should have been sacked;to serve as an example. This, he said, is to show that if much attention;is not “given to your job, you can be sacked too.” Also

Mr. Darko stated that the nation should be worried about those in charge not executing their duties well. He said the issue of poor transmission;should not be the main worry now.

“What we should be worried about is the fact that;we can sit in a country and the spectrum used;someone can connect it illegally and use it for profit purposes without authorization;and the institution responsible is not aware.”

Responsibilities were not carried out well

Also speaking, the editor of the Informer Newspaper, Andy Kankam also agreed with;the fact that the execution of the responsibilities of those in charge was not carried out well.

“The NCA carried out auditing of the radio stations leading to a shutdown of many. Does it mean that those TV stations operating illegally did not come to their attention?

“If you know that they have caused some infractions just like the radio stations;for non-payment of their license fees, these television stations also fall in the same category.”

Mr. Kankam also posited that the Authority now considering to close these stations is not ideal. He said the media stations should be closed right away. Further

However, he admonished the public not to blame the NCA alone. He posited that part of the blame should be apportioned to the national security since; the issue is also of security concern.

He disclosed that the act of money laundering was illegal and against the law. This, he said, if allowed will be a threat to security in the country coupled with the other contents showed.

The National Communications Authority (NCA) has embarked on an exercise to shut down 49 Television stations for operating without authorization.

This operation forms part of an exercise to sanitize the media space due to; the violation of regulations following an influx of television operators.

The NCA said the stations to be affected were operating without valid authorization.

The Authority said the stations’ involved acts were contrary to Section;2(4) of the Electronic Communications Act 775 of 2008, which states that,; “Except as provided by this Act or any other law not inconsistent with this Act,;a person shall not operate a broadcasting system or provide a broadcasting service without;a frequency authorization by the Authority.”
