Member of Parliament for Ejura, Mohammed Braimah, has suggested the removal of the Regional Minister in the Ashanti Region. According to him, the MCE who has been recommended to be removed from post by the three member committee reports only to the regional minister.

Mr Braimah explained that the three-member committee who investigated circumstances leading to the Ejura incident should have recommended the removal of the Regional Minister.

“The MCE does not act in a vacuum, he reports to the Chairman of the Regional Security Council who is the Regional Minister who himself admitted that he ordered the deployment of the Military and we all saw that, that deployment ended up in casualties with two losing their lives, one boy having the leg amputated, two other people getting injured”.

His comments follow the decision by the committee to opt for the dismissal of the Municipal Chief Executive and the sanctioning of the military troop leader.

Justifying its stance, the committee believes that the MCE of Ejura-Sekyedumase Assembly, Mohammed Salisu Bamba, could have done better in tackling the situation.

This, the committee explained, could have averted the death of the two persons and several others fro getting injured following the deployment of military personnel.

Despite the decision of the MCE to discontinue his quest for reappointment, the Committee has requested for his immediate removal from office.

Committee’s decision on Ejura incident

The report from the committee was presented to the Interior Minister, Ambrose Dery on Wednesday, July 27, 2021.

Contained in the report also was the call for punishment of the military troop leader of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) and a transfer of the District Police Commander for Ejura-Sekyedumase, DSP Philip Hammond.

The Committee, completed its work on July 16, 2021, after weeks of public hearings held in Kumasi.

Chaired by Justice Koomson, in his handing over of the report, he noted that they “attached serious importance to the work and dedicated ourselves to all issues with meticulous attention and details.”

“Having assured ourselves after listening to 22 witnesses and reviewed volumes of documents including audio and videos, we have come with our findings and proffered some recommendations.

“We hope the government through your good self [Interior Minister] will give a good ear to them and try to accept and implement them.”
