Two persons have been arrested in the Ashanti Region by the Police for alleged involvement in the sale of unwholesome chicken to consumers.

According to authorities from the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), an official from the Environmental Health stationed at the Adankwame bus terminal at Kejetia, perceived a foul smell while on duty.

Following this, the officer tracked the origin of the smell and chanced on a woman transporting cartons of chicken. The officer, then insisted on inspecting the product.

Per inspection, the officer realized that the woman whose name was given as Abiba, was transporting unwholesome chicken she had bought from the market.

Unwholesome products confiscated

Subsequently, personnel from the KMA explained that the environmental officer who confiscated the product led the woman to the environmental health unit. The woman, was later handed over to the Police for further investigations.

Addressing the situation, the Public Relations Officer for KMA, Henrietta Afia Konadu Aboagye, noted that the Police tracked where Abiba bought the chicken from and that led to the arrest of her accomplice, Kwadwo Asare.

“They have been taken to the Police Station. The Police kept them overnight. The CID has also told us there will be further investigations and after that, they will proceed to court to see what will happen. The items have been seized and the people have been arrested and they are going to carry out further investigations so that if there are more items in the cold store where the chicken was being kept, they will be destroyed”.

Woman arrested for selling expired goods

In 2018, a similar situation occurred when a 32-YEAR-OLD merchandise dealer was arrested by the Ashaiman District Police Headquarters for allegedly selling expired items including food to the public.

The culprit, Sadia Mohammed was said to have continuously picked expired stuffs at the Kpone Landfill Site where manufacturers dumped them.

Subsequently she sold the expired products to the public after cleaning and taking off the expiry dates on them.

Some of the expired items found in her room included branded cosmetics, mackerel and other edibles.

Speaking on the issue then, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) George Antwi-Tanoh, explained that his outfit received information on the woman and her hoarding of some unwholesome food items in her room. The woman’s action, he revealed, resulted in bad odour being dissipated in the neighbourhood.

Following the tip off, police mounted surveillance around the house where a search revealed a variety of food items stored in the woman’s living room.

ASP George Antwi-Tanoh revealed that after initial investigations, the police checked the items and discovered that they had all expired.

“That implied that the items are no more consumable or good for usage because they have expired.”

The Crime Officer stated that the woman was arrested together with the goods and brought to the police station.

“The woman was interrogated and she disclosed that she is unemployed and goes to the Kpone Landfill Site where she picks the items and cleaned them for sale to the public”.
