The University of Ghana Chapter of UTAG, has called on the Management of the school to launch investigations into the clash that ensued between residents of Mensah Sarbah and Common Wealth Hall during the SRC elections.

The President of UTAG-Legon, Dr. Samuel Nkumbaan, speaking on behalf of the chapter said measures should be instituted to curb the lawlessness perpetuated by the section of students each year. He then requested that all perpetuators involved be brought to book.

“We are calling on the management to go into the matter. Look at the details of the clashes and also fish out individuals who are found culpable of having contributed by way of vandalization that took place including crashing of windscreens of vehicles and also causing injuries to some of the students”.

Dr. Nkumbaan disclosed it’s about time the school authorities truly exert authority on the system by way of ensuring that students who are found culpable of such unlawful acts are punished. He suggested that the punishment should be meted out publicly to deter others from taking the laws into their hands.

National Security presence, not a bad idea

On beefing up security on the campus with National Security personnel, Dr. Nkumbaan noted its presence on the campus will not be a bad idea. He noted that for this move to come into fruition, there will be the need to seek permission before it can be done.

According to Dr. Samuel Nkumbaan, even for some intelligence to be picked by the National Security, the appropriate steps are needed to be taken for the management to be informed and then some form of agreement be reached for them to come.

“Without that invitation and that kind of engagement, for them to simply show up, people will not be sure what the basis would be and also speak on why it will be unadvisable to do so in an academic institution”.

The UTAG President revealed that when the clash happened, they knew the internal security will handle it and call in the Police if they were needed.

Touching on the reason for these recurring clashes, Dr. Nkumbaan disclosed that the clashes have to do with same level students having the feeling of superiority over one another by way of the halls they belong to.

“I remember that when I was a student in the mid 90’s it did happen. Students were injured, facilities were destroyed and so on. They lost a magnitude of things”.

UG-UTAG expressed its disappointment at the students’ failure to address their misgivings about the Student Representative Council’s (SRC) Presidential Run-off ,however, resorted to vandalism.
