Mercedes-Benz’s performance division has revealed its all-new Vision AMG Concept, previewing both a new design direction and a modified architecture that will underpin its new lineup of electrified vehicles starting in 2025.

The world’s auto giant made this known during a press conference outlining the German-based automaker’s brand strategy. Meanwhile, the new Vision AMG Concept took the spotlight as a design and engineering study.

Mercedes-Benz Group AG’s chief design officer, Gorden Wagener, hailed the new direction by the automaker, while providing a glimpse of the design, hinted that it will be a potential four-door performance EV that will rival the Porsche Taycan.

Mercedes-Benz Group AG’s Chief Design Officer asserted that though the new idea is currently in the research and development phase at its home base in Affalterbach, Germany, the Vision AMG Concept highlighted the company’s AMG EA platform, as it has been dubbed. He noted that AMG.EA platform is solely reserved as the backbone for the performance division’s new range of all-electric automobiles.

Variety of High Voltage Battery Under Development

Mr. Gorden Wagener disclosed that accompanying the new platform will be a modified variety of high-voltage battery and propulsion drive technology, currently under development by Mercedes-Benz’s own subsidiary, YASA. That notwithstanding, Mercedes-AMG wasn’t specific in terms of what kind of power outputs to expect. But the firm did note that its new drive systems will “deliver substantially more power than conventional electric motors.”

Mr. Gorden Wagener explained that the Vision AMG Concept’s AMG.EA platform focuses on maintaining a compact size and lightweight design. Aesthetically, he added that it maintains a direction of form-following function, prioritizing a shark-nosed front-end, and a low-lying, swooping tear-drop roof and shoulder line, all in the name of aerodynamics, which keeps the car slick through the air while improving driving range.

The Chief Design Officer indicated that the Vision AMG takes inspiration from some of the automaker’s other recent designs, following the same theme as the Vision EQXX and the production AMG EQS. It utilizes Mercedes-Benz’s latest vertical grille design, which interlocks Mercedes-AMG’s current distinctive grille design with the bespoke design reserved for Mercedes’ general EQ lineup.

Mr. Gorden Wagener, moreover, intimated that the concept also takes inspiration from some of Mercedes-AMG’s recent Formula One W10 EQ Power+ racer, which is exhibited by the aggressive rear diffuser and teal trim accents along the side sills.

Meanwhile, there is no indication that the Vision AMG will transition into a production model. However, it indeed highlighted the automaker’s commitment to electrification, even for its highly sought-after performance vehicles.

As the world is now struggling for fuel to power vehicles, the agenda on the table is electric vehicles which is also intertwined with the carbon zero agenda.
