Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has intimated that the Leaders of the June 4 demonstration must be condemned for contemplating to thread on such a disastrous path.

Reacting to the development in a social media post, the North Tongu MP stated that the persons involved must stop the demonstration proposed or must be stopped. Okudzeto Ablakwa averred that violence and the use of guns by demonstrators cannot be acceptable in any democratic society.

“Other countries after suffering the consequences are now campaigning for gun control — indeed, only this week, Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau introduced the most comprehensive gun-control legislation in that country’s history.”

Mr. Ablakwa asserted that the nation cannot allow a few reckless elements to arm untrained demonstrators no matter which ruling party they are demonstrating against. “Many Ghanaians are appalled and outraged by police brutalities but the solution cannot be further aggravation by creating explosive conditions for all-out war.”

Arrest individuals who submitted letter

Earlier, one of the organizers of the planned June 4 demonstration by the FixTheCountry Movement and a broadcast journalist, Godsbrain Smart, also known as Captain Smart, called on the Police to arrest the individual who submitted the letter which noted among other things that the group intends to march with weapons and private security.

According to Captain Smart, it is insane for the person to have included the part about the weapon and private security to the letter which was presented to the Accra Regional Police Command.

“It is insane that anybody will write that to the Police. Whoever did that is insane and I think the Police should arrest that person. I do not support violence and even though things are not right in this country I cannot even hold a blade for a demonstration. We did the first one successfully without violence so why do we have to be violent? I do not support violence in any shape or form.”

Captain Smart stated that he is tempted to believe that another Convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor wrote the letter to the Police informing them about the move to go on the armed demonstration. He added that he knows nothing about the letter and his lawyers are currently writing to address the trending issue.

The Journalist clarified that he does not in anyway support violence and will never approve a rebellious demonstration. “Why will I support the use of weapons to demonstrate when I want the country to be fixed? If they use violence and destroy the country, what will be left to be fixed?”

These comments came after the Accra Regional Command of the Ghana Police Service declined a request from some persons including #FixTheCountry convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor to demonstrate.

The Police indicated that the nature and character of the demonstration, as intended, is inconsistent with with the Public Order Act, hence the decision to stop it and renegotiate. The demonstration would have taken three days and allowed the leaders to address the nation on GTV.
