A CDD-Ghana fellow, Dr John Osae-Kwapong, has revealed that the incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is facing a difficulty political terrain in the country.

NPP supporters.

Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has called on the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to be peaceful in the conduct of its upcoming national executive elections.

According to him, it is crucial the party does not engage in acts of violence as it has been the case in recent elections at the party’s lower level. He urged members to be tolerant and and take a cue from the peaceful elections held by the opposition NDC.

“We don’t want them to go to Accra sports stadium and continue with what we saw at the polling station, constituency and regional level elections; it should be peaceful. The violence in our public elections is becoming too much, especially from their side. We the NDC have moved from that long time ago.”

Mr Dafeamekpor indicated that the contest “is not about just a flagbearer”, but the focus should be on the kind of flagbearer the party needs.

“… In any case, I want to wish them well as they go for their national elections. They did the polling station [and] we saw a lot of violence. They did the constituency one, we saw a lot more violence; the regional one was even more chaotic.”

Stephen Ntim for NPP National Chairman

On his part, Abdulai Kamal-Deen, a Deputy Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), expressed that Mr Stephen Ayesu Ntim, an aspirant for the party’s chairmanship will emerge winner.

According to him, Mr Ntim has a clear message to the delegates that he will produce a President for the party in the 2024 general elections to break the 8-year electoral cycle in Ghana.

“I can assure you that Stephen Ntim is going to be the National Chairman. This will be his 5th attempt to be the National Chairman. Twenty years of his adult life, he has been into it; he has been working hard, he stayed fit [and] he showed that patience pays… [Ntim] is sending a message, that ‘Give me a flagbearer, I will give you a president in 2024’. Simple.”

Prior to this, the NPP National Chairman aspirant, Stephen Ntim, revealed that the NPP can only win the 2024 elections if its members remain focused and united. He noted that breaking the 8 is dependent on a number of “ingredients, but key amongst them is Unity”.

“Until we present a united front, breaking the 8 would be a mantra; a mirage… The government continues to do its best under the circumstances we find ourselves. We all know that our current situation is as a result of happenings in the global community. Notwithstanding these issues, we believe and I know so to be true, that we shall win 2024.”

Mr Ntim indicated that internal elections bring their own issues and it’s often characterised with “acrimonious exchanges amongst aspirants and their supporters”. Nonetheless, he highlighted that if these are not addressed after internal elections, the unity the party desires to win the next elections would elude them.

“I am ready to resolve all disputes that will arise out of our internal contests. As humans as we are, we may go wrong at one time or the other during the campaign period. There is, therefore, the need to look at all these and address them so that in unison, we can defeat the enemy.”
