Ghanaian highlife and Afrobeat singer-songwriter, Kwame Eugene Marfo, who goes by the stage name Kuami Eugene, is known for several songs, including “Angela”, “Wish Me Well”, “Ohemaa” and many others, has stated that good music should not necessarily be in English, contrary to popular belief.

He claims that many people enjoy amazing music, particularly African music, without really understanding the lyrics.

“There are a lot of African songs we don’t understand but still jam to”.

Kwami

Kuami Eugene told in an interview that he believes music goes far regardless of ego. He added that one has to perform excellent music and, once it sounds nice, people jump on it.

However, he believes the language barrier will make it difficult for an artist to break into new markets.

“If you’re able to break through that barrier, then you can do the O2 arena and other places because those coming to watch you want to sing along, and if they don’t understand anything about the music it’s quite difficult”.

Kwami

Citing Nigerians as an example, he mentioned language as an advantage for the Nigerian music industry, as they sing their songs almost all in English.

“The fact that they use a lot of pidgin in their music and because it’s English, people understand what’s being said. So, when it’s played somewhere, it doesn’t have to be explained because they can understand everything being said in the song”.

Kwami

That notwithstanding award-winning musicians said that it’s not wrong to take pride in one’s roots and culture and that it’s also not terrible if Ghanaian music gets out there and people can relate to it.

He noted it is good if one really wants to get on the international market. They will have to do something that will be understood and that means adding a little of what they can relate to.

This song is the third single of Empire’s compilation album ‘Where We Came From(Volume 1)’ which highlights African Music and Culture.

According to him, the house help was the backing vocalist which makes it more soothing and enjoyable to his fans.

The musician has so far released two singles after debunking speculations of leaving his record label Lynx Entertainment.

He explained that the first track titled ‘Single’ mirrors his exit from a toxic relationship and this song has made waves in the music industry with millions of listeners applauding him for his hard work towards music.
