Inspector General of Police, George Akuffo-Dampare

Peter Lachene Toobu, the Wa West Constituency Member of Parliament (MP), has advised the IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare over the leaked audio.

In his advice, he emphasized the value of upholding the Ghana Police Service’s guiding principles and maintaining an impartial and clear attitude.

Mr. Toobu offered his counsel in reaction to a leaked audio recording purportedly featuring a Police officer and a politician discussing a scheme to depose Dr. Dampare as IGP. The discussion in the recording is focused on worries that Dr. Dampare’s unwavering attitude during the 2024 elections might prevent possible rigging.

Peter Lachene Toobu adviced Dr. Dampare on how to retain objectivity, prevent bias, and make sure he lives up to his own standards.

“My advice to Dampare as I always tell him, is to remember the principle of standing at ease in the service. This means having one leg on the civilian population and the other leg on the police population. He must ensure a proper balance and not favour one side.

“Neglecting this balance could harm his integrity. Therefore, he should always keep the principle in mind and approach his work in a simple and straightforward manner.”

Peter Lachene Toobu

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Wa West Constituency, declared his vehement opposition to the leaked recording that shows the government intends to rig the 2024 elections by organizing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare’s ouster.

Mr. Toobu called it “shameful” and “unethical lobbying” and emphasized that over time, various governments and elected Presidents have appointed Inspector Generals of Police (IGPs) who have either won or lost elections, showing that the IGP’s role does not involve the IGP issuing political orders.

He also advised against relying on police for political support, saying that doing so is a form of self-deception on the part of members of political parties. According to him, police officers swear an oath and breaking that oath is ‘considered a curse.’

“Successive governments and presidents appoint IGPs but still either lost or won and so IGP can’t give orders politically. If you are in a political party and waiting for police officers to help you then you are deceiving yourself. They take an oath and if they do something else, they end up bringing curses upon themselves.”

Peter Lachene Toobu

Relying only on security services to win elections is a sign of failure, according to the retired executive secretary to an ex-IGP. He added that there is a need for prudence about the tape that was released and that those who participate in politics within the service will ultimately pay a price for their activities.

Owusu-Bempah Accuses NDC Behind Leaked Tape

Ernest Owusu-Bempah, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Deputy Director of Communications, alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) was responsible for the alleged leak of the audio recording of the purported attempt to remove Inspector General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

In a statement, he claimed that the alleged Alex Mensah recording, which purported to show a plot to oust the Inspector General of Police, was nothing more than propaganda produced by the NDC.

“This audio recording of a conversation between a so-called police officer and the stalwart of the NPP in the northern region ought to be dismissed with every contempt that it deserves. The NDC has a notoriety for black propaganda and this is one of their antiquated antics.”

Ernest Owusu-Bempah

He further said that the NDC’s frantic attempt to seize power through deception is the real reason this fictitious audio clip ended up in the open space. He claimed that the NDC’s desperate attempt to seize political power by any means necessary is the main factor.

“They have been at it, and it has been ineffective over the course of time, and yet they have failed to learn the right lessons. They have been employing lies and dirty propaganda as well as well rehearsed jaundiced strategies to win elections but it has always ended in absolute turmoil.

“This their latest propaganda could very well amount to dancing themselves lame in rehearsals for a dancing contest they may not eventually take part in. All these are meant to serve no other purpose than egregious mischief aimed at demarketing the NPP. If the goal is to create a credibility problem, the ploy has failed woefully.”
