The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has appealed to the Electoral Commission of Ghana to extend the limited voter registration exercise for people who are yet to register due to the challenges associated with exercise.

The Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress, Mustapha Gbande, stressed that the Electoral Commission must ensure that all eligible applicants are registered before the exercise ends.

Mr Gbande indicated that people have queued for days at some registration centres and they must be allowed to register before the exercise ends.

“If you go to some centres, there are people who have been there in the last four days trying to register, and they have taken care of their feeding and accommodation and one would expect that the EC would have a space for these people to be registered at least before the exercise comes to an end”.

Mustapha Gbande

Mr Gbande also called on the Electoral Commission to deploy more machines and workforce in places where there is congestion to ensure that the Electoral Commission can register the people in the queue without the people having to go back home.

“If you go to a place like Asuogyaman, people have been in queues in the last four days, and the arrangements they have there is that you come and write your name and when it is time, then you come and register and so all these people assume that they are in a queue.”

NDC Calls On IGP To Beef Up Security At Upper West Akyem District Office

The Eastern Region branch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to beef up security at the district office of the Electoral Commission, Ghana (EC) in Upper West Akyem.

The National Democratic Congress accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Constituency Chairman, Nana Adei Obuobi, of causing mayhem and intimidating Electoral Commission officials by leading some thugs to fire gunshots.

“Per our intel, the thugs he brought to disrupt the registration process are members of the Okyenhene taskforce”.

In a press release issued by Eastern Regional Secretary of the party, Jamal Konneh, the party is calling on the Inspector General of Police to swiftly intervene in the disturbing situation in Adeiso, in the Upper West Akyem District.

“We call on the IGP and the Regional Commander to beef up security at Adeiso to help avert any unforeseen circumstances. We are also calling on Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panyin, to call his men to order”.

Jamal Konneh

Mr. Konneh also warned that the National Democratic Congress cannot be intimidated by the New Patriotic Party and its surrogates in the Region.

“We as a party believe in the democratic processes but we will and can never cower to submission to any entity. “NPP should advise themselves and think twice if this is the approach, they will employ going into 2024, because they do not have a monopoly over violence.”

Jamal Konneh

The limited voter registration exercise is scheduled to end across the country on Monday, October 2.
