North Tongu MP Commends US Ambassador’s Support for Education in Displaced Communities

The North Tongu Member of Parliament, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has commended the US Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Virginia Evelyn Palmer for her remarkable support towards education for the various displaced communities in the Volta Region due to the Akosombo and Kpong dams’ spillage.

The North Tongu legislator in a Facebook post on Saturday, January 2024 lauded the US Ambassador’s various interventions and other support for the educational needs of the displaced persons in some of the communities in the Volta Region.

According to the Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the US Ambassador, Her Excellency Virginia Evelyn Palmer’s has provided numerous humanitarian aid to address the educational challenges faced by displaced persons, particularly school pupils who were severely affected by the spillage.

The Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa further indicated that the US Ambassador’s delegation evaluated the effectiveness of past interventions and discussed ongoing initiatives to alleviate the difficulties faced by the displaced community in the Volta Region.

“Yesterday, we hosted the US Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Virginia Evelyn Palmer and Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum in my beloved constituency. The US Ambassador was on a mission to provide additional humanitarian support to address the educational needs of displaced persons as a result of the VRA’s spillage from the Akosombo and Kpong dams”.

Again, the Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Ranking Member for the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament indicated that the longstanding cordial bilateral relations between Ghana and the United States were prominently highlighted during the visit of the US Ambassador, Her Excellency Virginia Evelyn Palmer to his constituency.

He stated that the United States government, in collaboration with Ghanaian authorities, has generously provided large tents for learning, recognizing the need to accommodate displaced school pupils.

According to Honorable Ablakwa, the assistance package includes teaching and learning materials, sports kits, and cash grants which would benefit thousands of victims affected by the spillage.

Ablakwa Lauds Other Humanitarian Assistance To Flood Victims

Moreover, the Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa recounted that the humanitarian aid from the United States government complements the efforts of other international organizations such as UNICEF, the World Food Programme, and USAID, which reinforces the collaborative spirit that has made a positive impact on the communities that were affected by the dam spillage.

Commenting on his own initiative undertaken to address some of the challenges facing the displaced victims of the flood, Honorable Ablakwa underscored the importance of the MP’s Safe Alternative Housing Project.

He emphasized that the project when completed would bring significant relief to a large number of the affected victims of the Akosombo dam spillage flood.

“With deep appreciation, my chiefs and I presented a citation of gratitude to the affable and compassionate US Ambassador.   I took the opportunity to also highlight some of our own initiatives as the most affected constituency including conducting the delegation on a tour of our MP’s Safe Alternative Housing Project — everyone appears impressed with our resilience and what we are achieving on the ground to bring relief to my beloved constituents”.

The Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa concluded by stressing on the importance of solidarity and partnership, from all stakeholders including international partners and posited that such collaborative efforts could help address the challenges faced by the displaced persons in the North Tongu constituency and other affected communities in the Volta Region.
