Tyla’s Win Over Nigerian Nominees

South African singer, Tyla’s victory at the Grammy’s beating four Nigerian nominees, has fueled rivalry as the two nations prepare to face off in the AFCON semi-finals on Wednesday.

Tyla won for her song ‘Water’ in the Best African Music Performance, over Davido, Ayra Starr, and Burna Boy.

Nigerians have called on their national team, the Super Eagles, to avenge them.

“South Africa won today but Nigeria will win on Wednesday where it matters most,” one user wrote on X.

“No Nigerian won a Grammy, but a South African won. This is Nigerians being generous so that when we win the AFCON, they will have something to banter with,” another user wrote on X.

Nigerian Afrobeat giant Burna Boy was nominated in a total of four categories but did not walk away with a golden gramophone, yet his spellbinding performance at the award ceremony left the audience in awe.

Despite the fierce rivalry between Nigeria and South Africa, Davido extended his congratulations to Tyla on X and told her to “keep soaring”.

Tyla gave an emotional thank-you to her die-hard supporters, almost in disbelief at her huge win.

Coming from the successful premiere of her latest music video for Truth or Dare, the singer jetted off to Los Angeles for the Grammy Awards.

She was nominated for Best African Music Performance along with Musa Keys, and she won.“Oh my God, guys, this is crazy. Like, I never thought that I would say I won a Grammy at 22 years old. If you don’t know me, I’m Tyla from South Africa, and last year, God decided to change my whole life, thank you so much. Thank you, my team, and my family. I know my mother is crying somewhere in here. Thank you to the recording academy for this category,” Tyla said in her thank you speech.

Tyla’s supporters raved at their fave’s win and congratulated her.

“Your first award, being a Grammy Award, is legendary, Tyla.”
