Some key Members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament have vehemently dismissed reports that suggest impending changes in its Caucus in Parliament.

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Member for Parliament of Bekwai in the Ashanti region, Honorable Joseph Osei Owusu in a press conference on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, strongly denounced the news of an imminent change in the Caucus leadership and further described the report as false and unfounded.

According to Honorable Joseph Osei-Owusu, there have been no considerations, discussions, or intentions to alter the current leadership of the Majority Caucus in Parliament.

“Ladies and gentlemen of the press, we invited you here today because of some publications that suggest impending changes in the leadership of the Majority Caucus of Parliament. We are here to inform you that the publications are false and not true”.

Joseph Osei-Owusu

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament further asserted that the Majority Caucus in Parliament, which holds a significant role in Ghana’s Parliament, has not made any decisions regarding changes in its leadership.

He thus assured the general and supporters of the New Patriotic Party public that the caucus maintains enormous confidence in its current leadership and unequivocally stated that there are no plans to make alterations.

Furthermore, the Honorable Osei Owusu while addressing recent developments surrounding the nomination of the Deputy Chief Whip of the Majority Caucus, the Honorable Lydia Seyram Alhassan, as Minister-designate to the Ministry of Sanitation, indicated that the Caucus would make such replacement in due time.

He further noted that such replacement would be made by the Caucus, in accordance to the established processes within the parliamentary framework.

Parliament’s Newly Adopted Standing Orders And Caucus Leadership Selection

Moreover, the Member of Parliament for Bekwai Constituency, Honorable Joseph Osei-Owusu  argued that the recent changes in the parliamentary procedures, particularly its newly adopted Standing Order, place the selection of caucus leadership in the hands of the caucus itself and not the political parties.

He noted that the coming into force of the newly Standing Orders of Parliament reinforces the autonomy of parliamentary caucuses in deciding their leadership structures and not any external group.

However, the Honorable Joseph Osei Owusu reacting to the report of an attempt to remove the Majority Leader, Honorable Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, strongly denied knowledge of any internal or external attempts to remove the Suame Member of Parliament as the leader of the Majority Caucus in Parliament.

“The leadership of the Majority caucus is busy in the chamber, and it is about them, the rest of us must stand up for them because they have led us effectively and efficiently thus far, hence there is the need for all of us to defend them.

“Indeed it does not have to take the leaders to say we have to make a decision, it is we the members of the Caucus that would make such a decision if the need be and as we speak, we have not considered on making any changes to our leadership in the House”.

Joseph Osei-Owusu

According to Honorable Joseph Osei-Owusu, the Members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament have full confidence in the leadership of the Honorable Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu who have served as the Majority Leader since 2017.

He stressed that any decision to change the leadership would be made collectively within the Majority Caucus in Parliament, and as of now, no such discussions or considerations have taken place.
