A clash scene at Bawku

Dr. Adam Bonaa, a renowned Security Expert and Analyst has attributed the recent clash in Bawku to a fundamental breakdown in trust among security personnel and local residents in the area.

Dr. Bonaa, commenting on the sequence of events that culminated in a tense standoff between two law enforcement agencies and residents of Bawku stated that the perceived longstanding mistrust is mainly responsible for the unsettling events that unfolded.

He further recounted that per his sources, the recent clash between some personnel of the Ghana Police Service and military peacekeeping troops can be traced back to an encounter involving the police and an individual carrying firearms.

According to him, what should have been a routine procedure swiftly escalated into a standoff when military personnel intervened, expressing their distrust towards the police.

“I am reliably informed that the police accosted someone who had some firearms on their way to the police station some military officers accosted the suspect and police officers who were taking this person to the police station. The military said they didn’t trust the police”

Furthermore, Dr Adam Bonaa recounted that the situation which teetered on the brink of confrontation as suspicions heightened, involved some senior officers from both sides.

Dr. Bonaa indicated that the involvement of some senior officers of the Ghana Police Service and the military peacekeeping troops further exacerbated the already tense atmosphere.

Despite what he perceived as mistrust that exist among both security personnel and residents in the area, Dr Bonaa commended the police for their adept use of de-escalation techniques, preventing the situation from spiralling out of control.

Suspicion and Divison Fueling Bawku’s Instability

However, Dr Bonaa noted with concerns that beneath the surface of the recent clash in the Bawku area lies a deeper rift fueled by suspicion and division within the community.

He highlighted the simmering tensions within the security apparatus, exacerbated by the complex interplay of chieftaincy and ethnic affiliations in the region.

The renowned Security Analyst particularly pointed out that there has been some suspicion not just limited the prison officers within the Bawku area but also among the entire security setup within the area, stressing the growing mistrust that have permeated the community.

“There is some suspicion because you know even though the Bawku conflict will have to do with chieftaincy it is also ethnic. So there is that suspicion that some people kind of support one side or the other”.

Dr Adam Bonaa, Security Analyst

Dr Adam Bonaaa concluded his remarks by affirming the urgent need for the government to address the root causes of distrust and division plaguing the Bawku and its surroundings.

He emphasized that in a landscape fraught with complexities, building bridges of understanding and fostering genuine dialogue may prove to be the most potent tools in forging a path towards lasting peace and reconciliation.

Dr Adam, Bonaa’s comment comes following recent clash that happened between military peacekeeping troops and personnel of the Ghana Prison Service in Bawku, which left several officers injured.
