IEA to Host 2024 Presidential and Vice-Presidential Debates

The Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) has officially announced its plans to organize its flagship Presidential and Vice-Presidential Debates ahead of the 2024 General Elections.

The Public Policy Institute, in a statement, indicated that the flagship event is set to provide a vital platform for candidates to articulate their visions, policies, and plans for the country’s development.

“As part of The IEA’s efforts to promote issues-based elections in Ghana, The Institute will once again organize its flagship Presidential and Vice-Presidential Debates before the 2024 General Elections in December 2024”.

According to the Institute of Economic Affairs, the debates are designed to facilitate in-depth policy dialogue, allowing Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates of the various political parties in the country to present their viewpoints and programmes comprehensively.

The statement emphasized that the forum will enable candidates to highlight their policy proposals, scrutinize the plans of their opponents, and offer alternative solutions to Ghana’s pressing issues.

The statement further pointed out that by engaging in this structured dialogue, the various presidential and vice presidential candidates can showcase their preparedness to tackle the country’s challenges head-on, when given the mandate on December 7.

Engaging the Electorate

For the electorate, the Institute of Economic Affairs indicated that the debates represent an invaluable opportunity to gain firsthand insights into the policy positions of each presidential candidate of the various political parties in the upcoming general elections.

The statement noted that the moderators will field questions to the candidates, drawing from public submissions on a wide array of thematic areas.

These areas include the Economy, Governance, Natural Resources, Agriculture, Education, Health, Labour, Gender, Children, Youth, and other social issues.

The statement added that such an approach would ensure that the debates address the concerns of the populace, making the discussions relevant and informative.

Importance of the Debates

Highlighting the importance of the debate, the Institute of Economic Affairs, in its statement emphasized the significance of these debates in promoting transparency and accountability in the electoral process.

According to the statement, by providing a common platform for all candidates, the Institute seeks to level the playing field, allowing voters to make informed choices based on the candidates’ policy positions and their ability to articulate and defend their plans.

The debates, the statement affirmed are expected to be a critical component of the electoral process, shaping public discourse and influencing voter decisions.

Commenting on the specific timelines for the debates, the Institute of Economic Affairs pointed out that the exact date and time for the debates will be announced at the launch of IEA’s Election Activities.

The Institute of Economic Affairs, while concluding its statement, urged all candidates to participate in these debates, viewing them as an essential opportunity to communicate their vision and plans directly to the Ghanaian people.

The Public Policy Institute expressed its unwavering commitment to facilitating a constructive and informative electoral process, reinforcing its role as a key player in Ghana’s democratic landscape, and underscoring the importance of policy-based discourse in fostering a robust democracy.

The Institute of Economics Affairs encouraged all stakeholders, particularly the candidates, the electorate, and the media, to engage actively in this process, ensuring a vibrant and informed election period.
