Starmer Unveils Plan to Tackle Violent Disorder

Starmer Delivers First Speech As Labour Prime Minister

Prime Minister Keir Starmer

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has unveiled a new initiative aimed at enhancing the capabilities of police forces to address the recent surge in violent disorder across England.

At a press conference held at Downing Street, Starmer condemned the violence, describing the perpetrators as a “tiny, mindless minority” who are disrupting communities already grappling with grief.

Starmer acknowledged the understandable fear that such attacks provoke but urged the public to allow families affected by the violence the time and space they need to grieve.

He emphasized the importance of letting the authorities conduct their investigations without undue interference. “There will be a time for questions,” he stated, “and we will make sure that the victims and families are at the heart of that process.”

The Prime Minister stressed the necessity of justice for the victims while cautioning against prejudicing ongoing prosecutions.

“That’s the very least that we owe these families. But we also owe them justice. So, while there’s a prosecution that must not be prejudiced, for them to receive the justice that they deserve, the time for answering those questions is not now,” Starmer explained.

He highlighted the critical issue of ensuring that trials are not compromised, as such a compromise ultimately harms the victims and their families by denying them the justice they deserve.

Starmer also addressed the actions of a violent group that, in the wake of a recent attack, targeted Southport, a community already mourning a significant tragedy.

He described how this gang of troublemakers traveled to Southport, engaged in violence against police officers, and exacerbated the community’s suffering.

“A gang of thugs got on trains and buses, went to a community that is not their own, a community grieving the most horrific tragedy, and then proceeded to throw bricks at police officers — police officers who just 24 hours earlier had been dealing with an attack on children in their community.”

In his remarks, Starmer also touched on the role of social media in spreading misinformation and inciting violence.

He underscored that inciting violence online constitutes a criminal offense and is not protected as free speech.

“Social media platform providers, it’s an amazing opportunity that we all enjoy as a country that is very important to us that these platforms are there to be used for the great opportunities that they provide. There is also a responsibility that goes with it. That’s a space for a mature conversation to take place.”

The Prime Minister was further questioned about recent comments made by Reform UK leader Nigel Farage, who suggested that the public was being kept in the dark about the attacker’s identity in Southport.

Starmer chose not to directly address Farage’s remarks but reiterated his focus on the victims and their families.

“In relation to the comments of others, look, I’m not going to stand here and cast judgment on what others are saying,” he remarked.

“I know what I’m saying and I know why I’m saying it very, very clearly, which is my focus whenever I’m confronted with any questions about this is on the families and victims of those, particularly in Southport who were so affected by this.”

Chief Constable Gavin Stephens also weighed in on the recent violence. When asked about the motivations behind these acts, he emphasized that the priority is addressing the criminal behavior itself.

“It’s for us to address the criminality that we see. This is crime, it’s violent disorder,” he said. Stephens stressed that such actions only add to the suffering of bereaved families and called for calm and support within the affected communities.

Looking to the future, Stephens advocated for increased investment in neighborhood policing. He emphasized the need for a more profound understanding of local issues to better respond to them.

“One of the founding principles of policing across the UK is that we are part of our communities, that we understand their issues, and that we want to be there alongside them to deal with them,” he concluded.
