In the vibrant and diverse landscape of Ghanaian music, talent is a critical asset.

From highlife and hiplife to Afrobeats and gospel, Ghanaian musicians have made significant contributions to the global music scene.

However, as the industry evolves, it becomes increasingly clear that raw talent alone is not enough for sustained success.

The emphasis on developing good character is emerging as an essential component for musicians looking to make a lasting impact.

While talent opens doors, character determines how long those doors remain open.

Musicians with strong character traits such as integrity, humility, resilience, and respect are more likely to build lasting relationships with fans, industry professionals, and fellow artists.

Ghanaian gospel sensation, Joe Mettle has advised creatives in the music industry to adopt a character that would help them grow in the industry.

According to him, the talent given by God is not enough to ensure success, but an attitude of learning is necessary.

“Gift is important, but the gift itself is not enough. You need to improve on the gift God has already given you. So, it’s great that you are in the room right now, adding more knowledge and experience from the people that also God has given grace to travel the world and do this amazing thing we call music.

“I also want to say one other thing, character is also necessary, because gifted as you can be without character, trust me, many people will find it difficult having to work with you.”

In an industry often marked by competition, those who prioritize character distinguish themselves not only through their music but also through their reputation.

Good character fosters trust, which is crucial in the music industry. Musicians who are known for their integrity and professionalism are more likely to attract collaborators, sponsors, and loyal fans.

Moreover, trust extends beyond business relationships; it also includes the bond between artists and their audiences.

Fans are more inclined to support musicians who demonstrate authenticity and sincerity. By showcasing good character, artists cultivate a loyal fan base that resonates with their music on a deeper level.

The journey of a musician is often fraught with challenges, including financial instability, creative blocks, and public scrutiny.

Developing good character, particularly resilience, equips artists to navigate these obstacles. Resilient musicians are better able to handle criticism, learn from failures, and remain focused on their goals.

Role of Humility and Continuous Learning

Humility is a vital trait that significantly impacts a musician’s career. In an industry that often celebrates fame and fortune, remaining humble allows artists to stay grounded and committed to their craft.

Humble musicians are more open to feedback and willing to learn from others, which leads to artistic growth.

Musicians who appreciate the contributions of others and recognize the importance of teamwork create more innovative and impactful music.

The importance of character development is not just a personal endeavor; it is also a collective responsibility within the Ghanaian music community.

Established artists serve as role models for younger musicians by exemplifying strong character traits.

By sharing their experiences and emphasizing the importance of character alongside talent, they inspire the next generation to prioritize integrity and professionalism in their careers.

Joe Mettle urged aspiring musicians to strike a balance between perfecting their craft and developing vital personal attributes like integrity, humility, and a strong work ethic, which are essential for building a sustainable and impactful music career.

“Sometimes the gift will open the door for you, make a way for you to go to a place, but it is only character that will keep you there and keep you running. I understand that sometimes it might look like you are being maltreated or not treated, right? That’s a different situation.

“But when you find yourself always having to move, because of how character made you react and everything, maybe you should check it [your character] again.”

“And so as you learn, as you improve, as you grow in your craft, please be mindful that character is what will keep you there even though gift can open the door for you to get to that point,” he advised.

While talent remains a crucial element of success in the Ghanaian music industry, the importance of developing good character cannot be overstated.

Musicians who prioritize integrity, resilience, humility, and social responsibility are more likely to build lasting careers and make a meaningful impact on their communities.

As the music landscape continues to evolve, Ghanaian artists need to recognize that their character will ultimately define their legacy, shaping not only their careers but also the future of the industry as a whole.

By marrying talent with character, Ghanaian musicians not only reach greater heights but also inspire others along the way.
