In a stirring address at the launch of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Youth Manifesto on Monday, August 12, 2024, former President John Dramani Mahama, the party’s flagbearer, reaffirmed his commitment to the youth of Ghana.

With a focus on their potential and the importance of their contributions to the nation’s future, Mahama laid out his vision for creating a brighter future, should he be elected in the upcoming 2024 general elections.

“I believe in the potential of every young Ghanaian,” he declared, emphasizing that his campaign is not just about winning votes but about a deep-seated commitment to the youth.

Former President Mahama assured the youth of his dedication to creating a more prosperous and equitable future.

The former President expressed deep concerns about the current state of Ghana under the leadership of President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. According to Mahama, the mismanagement of the country’s resources has led to significant challenges, particularly for the youth.

The former President pointed to high unemployment rates, the difficulty young entrepreneurs face in succeeding, and the overall sense of hopelessness that has pervaded the younger generation.

“Under President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia, the situation for young people has become increasingly troubling. Unemployment is high, leaving many of you without hope or direction.

“It’s hard for young entrepreneurs to succeed, and the opportunities that once seemed plentiful are now rare. Every day seems worse for most young people, while a few people misuse our resources. This cannot continue!”

Mahama also criticized the current administration for what he described as the misuse and theft of public funds. He promised that, if elected, his administration would ensure that any public funds allegedly stolen under the NPP government would be recovered.

“We shall recover every stolen money!” former President Mahama vowed, signaling a tough stance on corruption and financial mismanagement.

The former President didn’t shy away from addressing the broader socio-economic challenges facing the country. He highlighted the struggles of the Ghanaian education system, which he believes is failing under the NPP government.

The former President Mahama painted a grim picture of a nation where the dream of a better future feels increasingly out of reach for many, leading to a growing sense of disillusionment with both the nation and its democratic processes.

Despite these challenges, Mahama’s message was one of hope and resilience. He urged young Ghanaians not to lose faith in their potential or in the country’s ability to turn things around. He pledged to use the next four years, if elected, to “reset our country to work for everybody, particularly, our young people.”

The 2024 elections, according to Mahama, represent a critical juncture for Ghana. He called for leadership that not only understands the struggles of the youth but also shares in their dreams and aspirations.

“We need leaders who will restore faith in our government and renew our national pride,” he said. Mahama positioned himself and his running mate, Professor Naana Opoku-Agyemang, as the leaders who could fulfill this vision.

Expressing his excitement about the prospect of working alongside Professor Opoku-Agyemang, who could become Ghana’s first female Vice President, Mahama urged the youth to place their trust in the NDC. “Please vote and put your trust in us,” he appealed, promising that his administration would prioritize the needs and aspirations of young Ghanaians.

Mahama’s address at the Youth Manifesto launch was not just a campaign speech; it was a call to action. he urged them to take an active role in shaping the nation’s future.

“From our people’s strength to fight for independence to our work in democratic development, we have overcome many challenges. But today, we face a most critical moment where our future depends on you.”

As Ghana approaches the 2024 elections, Mahama’s message to the youth is clear: their potential is boundless, and with the right leadership, the future can be brighter for all. The former president’s pledge to create opportunities and restore faith in the government is a central theme of his campaign, as he seeks to inspire hope and confidence in the next generation of Ghanaians.
