Financial Analyst Dr. Wisdom Kofi Dogbey has criticized the former finance minister and the current government over excessive borrowing and looting from the state Purse despite the economic crisis of the country.

Dr. Wisdom Kofi Dogbey cited Manasseh Azure Awuni’s new book which ignited a heated discussion about the role of Ghana’s former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, and his company, Databank, in the country’s economic challenges.

Dr. Dogbey emphasized that Manasseh Azure’s book highlighted that Data Bank may have accrued a staggering $9,000,000 from Ghana’s domestic borrowing during a period of significant economic hardship.

This situation has raised questions about the ethics and implications of the former minister’s actions.

Dr. Dogbey further highlighted a certain portion of Manasseh’s book in which according to the core of the controversy lies in the potential conflict of interest, where the very same people who were in charge of pursuing policies that would prevent such economic crisis or at least manage the crisis better were allegedly benefiting from the nation’s borrowing practices.

According to Dr. Dogbey, Manasseh Azure’s book revealed that while Ghana was grappling with severe economic challenges, including high domestic borrowing, the former Finance Minister and his company were seemingly profiting from the nation’s woes.

According to Dr. Dogbey, the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has been accused of failing to effectively manage Ghana’s finances and instead exacerbating the crisis through excessive borrowing.

Highlighting a perceived discrepancy, Dr. Dogbey pointed out that, “Despite previous claims that Data Bank had minimal involvement in these transactions, the evidence suggests a marked increase in their role once Ofori-Atta took office.”

The revelations have sparked widespread concern among Ghanaians about the transparency and integrity of public officeholders.

Responsibility and Integrity on the part of Government Officials

Dr. Dogbey highlighted the troubling optics of the situation, questioning the integrity of the officials responsible for managing the nation’s finances.

“Is this not a classic case of ‘Create, loot, and share? How on God’s green earth would we say that there is nothing wrong with these optics? If it is true, that a finance minister fails to properly manage the finances of the nation, then least efforts to borrow and borrow, it raises serious ethical questions.”

He further expressed his hopes for the future leadership of Ghana, calling for a thorough investigation into the activities of the former Finance Minister and other government appointees.

“I worry about these things and the impact on our nation, seriously. And I hope that either Dr. Bawumia or President Mahama, whoever wins the elections, would at the very least, properly investigate the activities of some of these government appointees, especially the finance minister.”

Dr. Dogbey’s remarks underscored a growing demand for transparency and accountability in Ghana’s governance. His call for investigation reflects a broader desire among Ghanaians for responsible leadership that prioritizes the nation’s well-being over personal gain.

Moreover, Dr. Dogbey provided insight into the potential implications of these allegations. He emphasized the gravity of the situation.

“If these allegations are true, it underscores a severe breach of trust and raises questions about the accountability mechanisms in place.”

Moreover, according to Dr. Dogbey in addition to the borrowing allegations, also lies the controversial contract signed by Ofori-Atta in the final hours of his tenure, specifically relating to an ambulance deal. This contract has been scrutinized as part of a broader investigation into the former minister’s conduct. He suggested that this contract, among others, may have been part of a pattern of questionable decision-making during Ofori-Atta’s time in office.

“It is imperative that such matters are thoroughly investigated to ensure that public officials are held to the highest standards of ethics and integrity.”

The potential ramifications of these revelations are significant. As Ghana approaches its next election, there is a growing call for accountability and reform.

“I hope that either Dr. Bawumia or President Mahama, whoever wins the elections, would at the very least, properly investigate the activities of some of these government appointees, especially the Finance Minister.”

This sentiment reflects a broader desire for transparency and accountability in Ghana’s governance structures. The Phenomenon underscores that, fast forward into the future, there would likely be undoubtedly increased scrutiny calling for a thorough investigation into these matters to restore public trust and ensure responsible governance.
