The war in Ukraine hasn’t lost its essence as a focal point in global diplomacy and conflict resolution.

It has not only captivated global attention but also stirred intense debates about effective pathways to peace.

Recently, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi made headlines with his visit to Kyiv, where he championed dialogue and diplomacy as the only viable solutions to the crisis while affirming Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

Modi’s stance reflects a broader international discourse on resolving entrenched conflicts through peaceful means, an approach that has garnered support and skepticism in equal measure.

Nonetheless, an expert has underscored a crucial reality that achieving lasting peace requires more than just dialogue; it demands a fundamental shift in how diplomacy is practiced.

Speaking with the Vaultz News, Mr. Henry Osabutey, a Human rights, Peace and Conflict studies expert, emphasized the necessity of establishing conditions where diplomacy can thrive between the warring nations.

He deeply resonated with Modi’s emphasis on dialogue and diplomacy as the only sustainable path to resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

Osabutey opined that this approach is much rooted in the fundamental principles of conflict resolution that underscores the importance of communication, understanding as well as compromise.

However, he cautioned, that the viability of this particular approach at the current juncture is very complex because this particular conflict has an entrenched position on both sides.

“But the key lies in building trust between the two of them, the two stakeholders and their partners. And so that we create conditions where diplomacy can flourish. Unless you create a condition that diplomacy can flourish. We don’t see any end to this.”

Henry Osabutey

He added that sustained international pressure and a census for peace is needed to make the dialogue a lot more feasible.

The agreements signed during Modi’s visit, Osabutey observed, signal a deepening relationship between India and Ukraine.

He averred that it would lay the groundwork for robust partnership that transcends the immediate conflict.

“So for Ukraine, this partnership, signals broadening its international support base, which is very crucial during  this difficult times. For India, this, agreement may be reinforced its commitment to Ukraine sovereignty and showcase its role as a responsible global actor. India is trying to play the fair role here.”

Henry Osabutey

Also, he noted that regionally, this agreement could shift dynamics by positioning India as a more active player because India’s involvement now might encourage other western nations to also engage Ukraine more assertively and potentially, altering the diplomatic landscape.

Additionally, Osabutey suggested that India’s proactive role in advocating for peace in Ukraine could mean a boost for its relationship with the West.

According to him, Western nations have been waiting eagerly to see India take a more assertive stance on global conflicts particularly in the context of Russia and Ukraine war because of its positioning in the zone.

“By engaging in peace effort by supporting Ukraine sovereignty, India could gain greater recognition and support from Western powers, potentially leading to stronger diplomatic and economic as well as security partnership. This commitment could also enhance India’s global image as a mediator and a peace builder, aligning it with other democratic nations.”

Henry Osabutey

“However, this approach must be heavily calibrated to avoid having issues with Russia, which remains a crucial partner for India in terms of defense and energy,” he cautioned.

Osabutey expressed that India has been tactical and very diplomatic so as not to lose the partnership with Russia.

“So they will not do anything that will jeopardize the relationship between themselves and Russia,” he iterated.

A Double-edged Sword

Moreover, in his exclusive dialogue with the Vaultz News, Osabutey shed light on how India’s emphasis on sovereignty and territorial integrity in his support for Ukraine influence its relationship with Russia.

He expressed that India’s stance on sovereignty and territorial integrity is a double edged sword in its relationship with Russia.

“On one hand, this principle could align with India’s own concerns regarding its borders and territorial disputes,” the Lecturer stated.

“Now on the other hand, this stance could also strain relationship with Russia, especially if India’s support for Ukraine is perceived as a challenge to Russia’s action,” he added.

“So India is doing the safe stance now, but they have to be tactical and diplomatic about it. India has decided to maintain delicate balance in its foreign relations with other countries especially with Ukraine and Russia.

“And they may continue to do so, emphasizing a commitment to peace rather than taking, confrontational stance against Russia. They will not condemn Russia. They will not condemn Ukraine.”

Henry Osabutey

“So by framing its support for Ukraine in the context of international law and the need for peaceful resolution, India can potentially mitigate tensions with Russia while staying true to its principle,” he emphasized.

Osabutey’s call for creating a fertile ground for negotiations reflects a growing recognition that sustainable solutions hinge on trust and understanding between adversaries.

While the path forward remains challenging, fostering these diplomatic conditions may well be the key to steering the conflict toward a resolution.
