The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a follow-up letter to the Electoral Commission (EC), calling for an urgent forensic audit of the 2024 voters’ register and its IT system.

In a letter signed by the party’s General Secretary, Hon. Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC expressed deep frustration with the Electoral Commission’s lack of response, despite the serious concerns raised about the integrity of the voters’ register.

“We refer to our petition of 17th September 2024, NDC/HQ/E/69/VOL2/33 in which we among other things, requested for a forensic audit of the voters’ register and its IT system.

“This follow up letter has become necessary due to the fact that, the Commission has not had the courtesy to reply our petition till date. Neither has the Commission officially responded to the serious issues we have raised in the petition and the request for a forensic audit thereof”.

The letter underscored the critical need for a comprehensive audit to address potential vulnerabilities and anomalies in the system, particularly as the nation approaches a crucial election.

NDC’s Call for Transparency

The NDC’s request for a forensic audit is rooted in ensuring the accuracy, transparency, and fairness of the electoral process.

The party’s leader reechoed questions about discrepancies in the voters’ register, citing concerns that, if left unaddressed, could undermine public confidence in the outcome of the elections.

The letter emphasized that a credible electoral roll is the foundation of a free and fair election, a principle that aligns with the Electoral Commission’s own declared motto: “Transparency, Fairness, and Integrity.”

The NDC’s follow-up letter, while respectful in tone, expressed disappointment that the Commission had not afforded the party the courtesy of an official reply to the petition or acknowledged the pressing issues outlined.

The party urged the EC to act swiftly, stressing that the audit is a matter of “considerable public interest” and critical to the credibility of the December 7, 2024, polls.

The EC’s Responsibility

The National Democratic Congress’s letter also pointed to the EC’s duty to maintain public trust in the electoral system. By conducting a forensic audit of the voters’ register and IT system, the party believes the Commission can demonstrate its commitment to upholding the principles of transparency, fairness, and integrity.

The NDC’s call for a forensic audit is part of the party’s broader efforts to ensure a transparent electoral process. As the nation moves closer to the 2024 general elections, the outcome of this demand could have significant implications for voter confidence and the legitimacy of the election results.

The NDC expressed hope that the Electoral Commission will act promptly and in accordance with its guiding principles to address the concerns raised, ensuring that the December 7 polls proceed smoothly and with the full confidence of all stakeholders.

Implications for the December Polls

With less than three months to the general elections, the NDC’s push for a forensic audit signals mounting tension between the opposition party and the electoral management body.

Concerns about the integrity of the voters’ register have long been a point of contention in Ghana’s electoral landscape, and the NDC’s latest demand reflects fears of potential systemic flaws that could compromise the election’s outcome.

The party’s call for an IT system audit is particularly significant, given the increasing reliance on technology in the electoral process.

Any potential weaknesses in the EC’s IT infrastructure could pose risks of voter disenfranchisement, data breaches, or manipulation, the NDC argued.
