The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has issued a stern directive to all its parliamentary candidates, urging them to ramp up their engagement with constituents ahead of the crucial December 2024 general elections.

The party leadership, through its General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, expressed concerns over the sporadic presence of some candidates in their constituencies, warning that a lack of active involvement could negatively affect both the presidential and parliamentary races.

In a memorandum addressed to all parliamentary candidates, with copies sent to key party officials including the National Chairman, Campaign Chairman, Campaign Manager, and regional and constituency executives, the NPP leadership stressed the importance of being visible and accessible to the electorate during this critical period.

The General Secretary’s memo emphasized that some candidates have been conspicuously absent from campaign activities, a development the party views as a potential threat to its electoral fortunes.

“It has come to our attention that some parliamentary candidates are not consistently present in their constituencies for campaign-related activities. You should know that this lack of engagement would significantly affect our electoral fortunes in both presidential and parliamentary elections.”

In response, the party issued a clear mandate, urging all parliamentary candidates to spend a minimum of four days per week in their respective constituencies. This move is seen as a crucial strategy to maintain a strong grassroots presence and maximize voter outreach as the elections draw closer.

Regional Campaign and Monitoring Team

To ensure compliance with this directive, the statement indicated that the leadership of the ruling party has tasked regional campaign teams to closely monitor and report on the activities of parliamentary candidates.

The memo instructed regional teams to submit weekly reports to the National Secretariat, providing a detailed account of the candidates’ engagement within their constituencies.

This reporting mechanism is intended to maintain accountability and ensure that candidates are actively participating in the party’s nationwide efforts to retain power.

This development underscores the NPP’s awareness of the intense competition they face in the upcoming elections, especially from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

With the political climate heating up and voter sentiment playing a decisive role, the party is determined to secure victory by ensuring its candidates are on the ground, connecting with constituents, addressing local concerns, and reinforcing the NPP’s campaign message.

The NPP, which has governed Ghana since 2017, is facing a challenging electoral landscape. Its campaign is focused on touting the government’s achievements, particularly in infrastructure, economic management, and social interventions.

However, the party is also confronting criticism over economic challenges, including high inflation and public debt levels, making the December polls highly competitive.

With this directive, the NPP leadership aims to maintain its connection with the grassroots, leveraging its candidates to deliver votes for both the presidential and parliamentary tickets.

In his closing remarks, the General Secretary expressed confidence in the commitment of the party’s parliamentary candidates, stating, “We trust in your usual attention and cooperation in this matter.”

The NPP’s campaign slogan, Development in Freedom continues to underscore its broader vision of progress and economic empowerment within the framework of democratic governance.

The NPP’s call for stronger constituency-level campaigning signals its recognition of the importance of direct voter engagement.

With only a few weeks to go until the general elections, the party’s success will largely depend on its ability to mobilize supporters, win over undecided voters, and sustain momentum in every constituency across the country.
