Mahama Calls for Justice and Fairness as Cornerstones of Peace

Former President John Dramani Mahama, NDC Presidential Candidate for the 2024 general election

Former President John Dramani Mahama, the 2024 Presidential Candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has underscored the critical link between justice and peace ahead of the December 7 election.

The National Democratic Congress leader, in a statement, after he participated in the National Peace Campaign Launch, highlighted the responsibility of leaders and citizens alike to foster a just and secure society.

“I suspended my campaign on Sunday to join the Ghana Pentecostal & Charismatic Council, the Christian Council of Ghana, the Office of the National Chief Imam, the Ghana Catholic Bishops Conference, and the National Association of Charismatic Christian Churches at the launch of a National Peace Campaign.

“Peace is not merely the absence of conflict. It is the presence of JUSTICE, FAIRNESS, AND MUTUAL RESPECT”.

He stressed that sustainable peace goes beyond silence and is built on a foundation of equality and respect for every Ghanaian.

Proactive Approach to Address Social Tensions

Reflecting on recent violent conflicts, particularly in Bawku, former President John Dramani Mahama warned that a reactive approach to social tensions is insufficient and urged the nation to be proactive in addressing the issues that lead to violence and disunity.

He pointed to the tragic consequences of unresolved tensions, where “lives are being lost and families are being shattered,” calling for a national commitment to securing the peace that prioritizes justice and the well-being of every community.

Dedication to National Harmony

On behalf of the opposition National Democratic Congress, former President Mahama reaffirmed his party’s dedication to upholding values that promote national harmony and social cohesion.

“We pledge to be the voice of the voiceless and to stand alongside every Ghanaian committed to peace—a peace grounded in justice,” he stated solemnly, positioning the National Democratic Congress as a champion for equitable governance and a bulwark against social injustice.

He urged all political parties and stakeholders to prioritize national unity over division, emphasizing that peace cannot be achieved in isolation but rather through an unwavering commitment to justice for all.

Former President Mahama’s call for justice-driven peace underscored how socio-political tensions, economic pressures, and inter-community conflicts have increasingly challenged social cohesion.

His emphasis on dialogue, respect, and justice as prerequisites for a stable society reflects a core tenet of the NDC’s vision for governance. The former President’s message positioned him as a peace advocate, seeking to guide the nation towards a future defined by justice, inclusivity, and respect for human rights.

The event marked a concerted effort by Ghana’s major religious organizations and political figures to reinforce a culture of peace amid rising concerns over electoral violence and ongoing regional conflicts.

In addition to former President Mahama, leaders from various faith communities and political leaders attended the event, sharing insights on the importance of fostering peaceful co-existence, and making a collective call to the public to reject actions that threaten Ghana’s democratic fabric.

The National Peace Campaign is expected to continue throughout the election season, with various events planned across the country to promote messages of unity and shared responsibility for Ghana’s future stability.
