In a strategic move highlighting the significance of the Ashanti Region in Ghana’s political sphere, Mrs. Lordina Dramani Mahama, wife of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential Candidate former President John Dramani Mahama has paid a courtesy visit to the Manhyia Palace.

The purpose of her visit was to receive the blessings of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and the Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III, in anticipation of the critical December 2024 elections.

Mrs. Mahama’s visit to Manhyia underscored her recognition of the cultural and political weight carried by the Ashanti monarchy. During her address to the royal family, she expressed her gratitude and appreciation, urging for support and blessings for her husband, former President John Dramani Mahama.

“As we all know, my husband, your son, John Mahama, is contesting for the presidency in December. I always feel at home every time I visit Manhyia, as Asantehemaa has been like a mother to me.”

Her words not only conveyed respect but also reinforced the longstanding relationship between the Mahama family and the royal household. The Asantehemaa on the other hand, reciprocated with warmth, welcoming Mrs. Mahama’s visit graciously.

She shared her joy over the visit and extended her prayers for divine guidance as the country approaches another significant electoral period. “We pray for peace and wisdom so that Ghana will choose the right leader,” Nana Konadu Yiadom III said, voicing the aspirations of many Ghanaians for a peaceful and fair election process.

Engagement with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II

Following her time with the Asantehemaa, Mrs. Mahama met privately with Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. This behind-closed-doors meeting underscored the importance of her visit, aimed at garnering both symbolic and practical support as she embarks on her campaign in the Ashanti Region—a known stronghold of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Mrs. Mahama was accompanied by an entourage that underscored the NDC’s strategic focus on unity within its ranks. Key members included Nana Kwasi Andrew, the NDC Regional Chairman; former Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu; Deputy Director of Communications, Obuobia Darko-Opoku; and Kenneth Adjei, former Deputy Defence Minister.

The delegation also included members of the regional women’s wing and parliamentary candidates from various Ashanti constituencies.

The former First Lady’s visit is part of a broader NDC strategy to establish a presence in the Ashanti Region, which, while traditionally aligned with the NPP, holds considerable potential swing votes that could influence the presidential election’s result.

The visit’s timing, ahead of a planned nationwide outreach, reflects the campaign’s commitment to engaging key traditional and influential bodies to build support.

With the blessings of Manhyia, Mrs. Mahama is poised to begin her campaign in the Ashanti Region with renewed determination, aiming to engage with local stakeholders, leaders, and voters.

This visit represents an important milestone in the NDC’s campaign efforts, illustrating its commitment to strengthening ties with influential leaders and gathering wider support for John Mahama’s presidential bid.
