Esq. Carruthers Tetteh Honored with EMY Africa’s “Man of Courage” Award

Esq. Carruthers Tetteh, a distinguished lawyer and lecturer at the University of Cape Coast Faculty of Law, has been honored with the “Man of Courage” award at the 9th Annual EMY Africa Awards. 

This prestigious accolade recognizes individuals who have overcome significant challenges to make meaningful contributions to society. 

As Ghana’s first visually impaired law lecturer, Esq. Tetteh embodies determination, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to education and advocacy.

The EMY Africa Awards celebrates exceptional gentlemen across various fields who are making significant societal impacts.

Esq. Tetteh’s recognition as a Man of Courage highlights his remarkable journey and his trailblazing efforts in promoting inclusivity, justice, and equal opportunities. 

Despite losing his sight, he transitioned from specialized to mainstream education and achieved a groundbreaking milestone by being admitted to the Ghana Bar.

Speaking at the event, Esq. Carruthers Tetteh remarked that while life presents various challenges, it is within those challenges that one must discover new strengths to overcome them.

“We must always do what it takes to ensure that we’re able to achieve our dream. I did not give up on my dream. I kept pressing on. And because I knew what I wanted, I was always working towards achieving that dream. 

“God has blessed us with a lot of abilities, and the fact that you have lost an ability does not make you a disabled person. You can capitalize on the other abilities to make an impact in your society”.

In his role as a lecturer, Esq. Tetteh teaches Criminal Law and the Ghana Legal System at the University of Cape Coast, where he is celebrated for his innovative teaching methods and dedication to empowering future legal professionals. 

His work exemplifies the impact of resilience and determination in overcoming barriers and inspiring others to excel.

A Career Marked by Excellence

Esq. Carruthers Tetteh’s professional journey spans both the public and private sectors, demonstrating his versatility and commitment to advancing justice and inclusivity. 

A Master of Laws (LLM) holder in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Ghana, he has continuously worked to uphold the principles of fairness and equity.

Currently, Esq. Tetteh serves as a Law Lecturer at the Faculty of Law, University of Cape Coast, where he is renowned for his engaging and practical approach to teaching. 

He works as an Associate Lawyer with Roseford Advocates in Winneba, contributing to the delivery of quality legal services.

From 2020 to 2023, Esq. Tetteh held the position of Senior Publication Officer at the Bureau of Ghana Languages, where he played a pivotal role in promoting the development and preservation of local languages. 

In 2022, he took on a crucial leadership role as Head of the Legal and Case Management Unit at the National Council for Persons Living with Disabilities, where he championed the rights of persons with disabilities and facilitated case management efforts to address legal challenges faced by this community.

A Passion for Advocacy and Community Service

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Esq. Tetteh is a dedicated advocate for marginalized groups, particularly persons with disabilities and the underprivileged.

He serves on the Board of Directors for Hope for Future Generations (HFFG), a non-governmental organization focused on promoting the welfare of women, children, and persons with disabilities.

Through his work with HFFG, Esq. Tetteh actively contributes to initiatives that address critical societal issues, including healthcare access, education, and social inclusion. 

His passion for justice extends to providing pro bono legal services, ensuring that even the most vulnerable have access to legal representation and equal opportunities.

Esq. Tetteh’s advocacy is rooted in his personal experiences and a deep understanding of the systemic barriers faced by persons with disabilities. 

His efforts have not only improved the lives of individuals but have also set a precedent for inclusivity and empowerment within Ghana’s legal and social systems.
