The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketia has expressed concerns over the delayed declaration of election results by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Addressing the nation, Asiedu Nketia highlighted the tension rising from the EC’s inaction and called on stakeholders to ensure that justice prevails to secure peace in the country.

In his address, Asiedu Nketia acknowledged the concession speech delivered by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. He emphasized;

“Fortunately, these results have not been contested by our main opponents, and they have heeded our call to concede defeat so that we can bring down the tension that had been rising in the nation.”

The NDC Chairman criticized the EC for failing to announce the results despite the consensus reached by the two major political parties. He described the EC’s inaction as a source of unnecessary tension.

“Our agents countrywide are complaining because they simply do not understand the reason why the Electoral Commission is not announcing the obvious. We thought that the competent Electoral Commission must have had their results now. Because you have a commission which is a referee. The key players, the two key players, have produced our results, and you are to pronounce them, and yet they seem to be dragging their feet.”

He described the situation as a dangerous moment in the country’s history and urged the EC to act swiftly to prevent further escalation. He bemoaned;

“The youth of this country have started reacting. And I think that this is a very dangerous moment in the history of our country.”

Addressing the issue of peace declarations, Asiedu Nketia recounted the NDC’s decision not to sign the National Peace Council’s agreement.

“We put our cards on the table that peace cannot be guaranteed by the two participating political parties in the election because you have other stakeholders whose responsibility is to maintain peace at each of the election theaters. We demanded that justice be done in places where crimes had been committed during elections, some of which have been investigated, particularly the case, and a report generated with recommendations for sanctions.”

The NDC Chairman expressed disappointment in the National Peace Council. He charged;

“We have not heard the National Peace Council or anybody in the peace industry calling the Electoral Commission to fast-track their duty of collating and announcing results so that it brings peace in this country.”

He accused the government of colluding with the EC to delay the declaration and foment unrest to justify military interventions. He emphasized that the NDC had won;

“President John Dramani Mahama has secured a historical 56% of the votes. These figures are compilations from our copies of the Electoral Commission’s pink sheets across the country.”

He referenced the NDC’s previous experience with electoral disputes, emphasizing the need for fairness.

“The only way I can call on the youth of my party and this country to remain calm is where justice has been delivered. We cannot remain calm and be cheated twice.”

The NDC Chairman concluded by urging the EC to expedite the declaration of results.

“You don’t need to declare all the constituency results before you declare the winner of the presidential elections. That can be done.”

He also warned of the consequences of continued delays, stating; “If I, as the national chairman of NDC, call on my party people to remain calm and allow themselves to be cheated, I will not survive it.”

Johnson Asiedu Nketia’s address highlighted the importance of justice and transparency in securing peace during elections.

His call to the Electoral Commission and stakeholders emphasized the urgency of announcing results to prevent unrest and uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
