Hon. Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for the Bawku Central Constituency and Ghana’s Representative to the ECOWAS Parliament, has been formally chosen as the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in the 9th Parliament of Ghana’s 4th Republic.

The announcement comes after a unanimous decision by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus, comprising 187 Members of Parliament, marking a historic moment for the party and the nation.

In his acceptance address, Ayariga expressed profound gratitude to President John Dramani Mahama, the NDC leadership chaired by Hon. Johnson Asiedu Nketia, and his colleagues in Parliament for the confidence reposed in him.

Hon. Mahama Ayariga’s political journey spans decades, marked by leadership roles at various levels of governance. First elected to Parliament on January 7, 2005, Ayariga has served in diverse capacities, including Deputy Minister of State and Minister of State.

After a brief absence from Parliament, he returned to continue his legislative work, consistently holding positions on the front bench.

“I started my career as a student leader and then as an Assemblyman for Sabongari in the Bawku Municipality.

“Today, I stand fulfilled as the man to lead the largest majority in the history of our 4th Republic.”

His appointment as Majority Leader is a continuation of a legacy upheld by former distinguished leaders of the NDC caucus, including Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, Hon. Cletus Avoka, Hon. Benjamin Kunbuor, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, and most recently, Hon. Cassiel Ato Forson.

Hon. Ayariga vowed to honor their contributions and draw inspiration from their leadership styles as he takes on his new role.

Hon. Ayariga emphasized that the overwhelming mandate given to President John Dramani Mahama and the NDC caucus by the Ghanaian people would be used responsibly to advance national development.

“Even though we are an overwhelming majority, we will strive for inclusivity, consensus building, and deeply uphold the principles of probity and accountability.”

He reaffirmed the NDC’s commitment to the founding principles of the party and its dedication to resetting Ghana’s trajectory for the benefit of future generations.

Central to Ayariga’s vision is a steadfast commitment to the Ghanaian people. He urged Members of Parliament to remain focused on fulfilling the aspirations of their constituents.

“Their trust must inspire our actions and guide our decisions. It is for them that we will build a prosperous, united, and democratic Ghana.”

He called on all MPs to work diligently to ensure that Parliament delivers meaningful results that improve the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.

Hon. Ayariga’s speech highlighted the NDC’s pledge to promote inclusive governance. While the NDC holds a commanding majority in Parliament, he assured Ghanaians that this power would not be abused.

“We will rigorously pursue the agenda to reset Ghana,” Ayariga said, adding that the party’s mandate would be driven by the principles of consensus building, constructive dialogue, and mutual respect.

The Majority Leader also acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in the collective ability of Parliament to overcome obstacles.

Ayariga’s appointment comes at a critical time in Ghana’s political history, with the NDC holding the largest majority in the country’s 4th Republic. This development places significant expectations on the party to deliver transformative policies and drive national progress.

However, Ayariga expressed confidence in the ability of the NDC caucus to navigate these challenges, emphasizing the importance of collective effort and shared responsibility.

Mahama Ayariga’s appointment as Majority Leader of the 9th Parliament signals a new chapter in Ghana’s political landscape. His commitment to unity, transparency, and equitable development reflects the aspirations of the Ghanaian people for a Parliament that works for all.

As the new Parliament begins its work, all eyes will be on Ayariga and the NDC caucus to deliver on their promises and ensure that their leadership translates into tangible benefits for the nation.

The coming years will serve as a litmus test for their ability to drive progress while fostering an inclusive and democratic Ghana.
