Arise for Change for Economic Growth (AsEC), a group affiliated with the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), has called for a transparent investigation into election-related killings that occurred in the Techiman South constituency and other parts of the country during the 2020 and 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections.

During a press briefing held at the Techiman Zongo L.A. School Park, the National Chairman of AsEC, DS Mahama Iddrisu, highlighted the need for accountability and justice for the victims of election violence.

The group raised concerns about the pace of investigations and the perceived bias of some officers in charge, demanding a fair and credible outcome.

AsEC acknowledged the directive given by President John Dramani Mahama to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to investigate the tragic killings that took place in Techiman South and other locations. However, the group expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of these investigations, stating that little has been done to bring the perpetrators to book. The group alleged;

“The matter has been referred to the Director of CID for further investigation by the IGP, but it came to our notice that these officers are NPP sympathizers.’’

AsEC insisted that the investigations must be handled with impartiality. They warned;

“We are watching the outcome of the investigation report from those police officers. We are also calling on the authorities to ensure transparency and fairness in the investigation. Ghanaians are watching, and we expect a credible report that reflects the truth. If the findings do not align with the evidence, we saw in the videos recorded, we will not accept the outcome of the matter. Justice must prevail.’’

Concerns Over Alleged Corruption

Moreover, beyond the call for transparency in election-related investigations, AsEC raised concerns over allegations of corruption by the past administration. DS Iddrisu Mahama, speaking on behalf of the group, urged the government to take decisive action to retrieve misappropriated funds allegedly embezzled by officials of the past administration.

The group accused the past government of failing to take serious action against corrupt individuals, which has led to a loss of public trust. They called on relevant authorities, including anti-corruption agencies, to conduct thorough investigations into cases of financial mismanagement. According to the group, the Nana Akufo-Addo-led administration has been riddled with corruption scandals, yet little has been done to bring the culprits to justice. Ghanaians deserve better leadership that prioritizes accountability and good governance.

AsEC reiterated that their primary concern is justice and fairness, particularly in matters involving human rights violations and economic governance. The group reminded law enforcement agencies of their responsibility to serve the people without bias.

The group also called on civil society organizations, religious leaders, and international observers to keep a close watch on the investigation process and hold the Mahama government accountable.

Meanwhile, the demand for a transparent investigation into election-related killings is not just about seeking justice for victims; it is about restoring public confidence in Ghana’s democracy. AsEC’s call for accountability underscores the need for an impartial justice system and a government that upholds the rule of law.

With concerns over potential political bias in the investigation process, AsEC has made it clear that they will not accept any report that does not reflect the truth. Their demand for action against corruption also signals a broader concern about governance and economic management in the country.
