The Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, has underscored the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) following his maiden visit to the General Headquarters of the GAF in Accra.

The visit, marked by a grand inspection of a Guard of Honour by the Ghana Navy, provided an opportunity for the Minister to engage extensively with the Military High Command and gain firsthand insight into the conditions affecting military personnel and infrastructure.

Dr. Omane Boamah, in a statement, emphasised that his visit was not merely ceremonial but a demonstration of President John Dramani Mahama’s determination to strengthen the country’s security apparatus and improve the welfare of its personnel.

“The Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, President John Dramani Mahama, means business!” he declared, signalling the administration’s focus on security and national defence.

“…was very eventful because while soldiers were in the Asuokow community in the Eastern region to assess the river which the courageous children dangerously cross to school, I was also immersing myself in welfare matters that will motivate our gallant soldiers to patriotically serve our dear nation even at the peril of their lives.”

Recounting the details of his visit, Dr Omane Boamah highlighted an in-depth discussion with the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, and other senior officers.

The discussions covered key challenges facing the Armed Forces, including the burden of outstanding debts and the untapped opportunities that could enhance the effectiveness of the military.

“I thank the Military High Command and the GAF leadership for their warm and enthusiastic reception during my visit. Our discussions were frank, and I fully acknowledge the pressing issues that need urgent intervention”.

Inspection of Military Installations and Infrastructure Needs

Beyond the headquarters, Dr. Omane Boamah toured the Army, Naval, and Air Force Headquarters, where he engaged with officers, service personnel, and civilian employees.

The tour extended to critical project sites, including New Duala and Arakan, sites for Ordinance Units and the Military Band, as well as the Ghana Military Academy.

During the tour, the Minister was struck by the number of stalled and uncompleted projects, some dating as far back as 2010. He also observed several dilapidated homes in urgent need of renovation.

“These projects need immediate attention! While some impactful projects are currently underway, their completion must be expedited,” Dr Omane Boamah emphasised, assuring military personnel that his Ministry will prioritise solutions to these challenges.

The Minister’s visit marks the beginning of a series of field engagements aimed at immersing him and his team in the operational realities of the Armed Forces.

By directly interacting with personnel and assessing facilities firsthand, Dr. Omane Boamah aims to ensure that government policies align with the needs and expectations of the military.

His assurance to expedite interventions in housing, logistics, and project completion reaffirms the government’s pledge to enhance the capacity and welfare of the Armed Forces, ensuring that Ghana’s military remains resilient and well-equipped to safeguard national security.
