The Deputy Director of Operations at the Presidency Mr. Mustapha Gbande, has made a daring statement about the Former Finance Minister Ken Offori Atta, that he would face justice even in death. He defended the actions of the security forces in raiding Ken Ofori Atta’s house while condemning the former minister’s tenure in government.

Gbande asserted that the operation was justified given the nature of national security. He explained that national security is primarily composed of military and police officers and that their presence in such operations is standard procedure.

According to him, they were performing a legitimate function as national security officers. He also pointed out that the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) had not sanctioned the operation but that the National Security apparatus had, raising concerns about multiple investigations into Ken Ofori-Atta.

Mr. Gbande further highlighted that the security forces did not commit any acts of violence, break into the house, or steal anything. Instead, they simply entered the premises through an open gate, conducted their search, and left.

Turning his attention to Ken Ofori-Atta’s tenure as finance minister, Mr. Gbande was highly critical. He argued that Ofori-Atta was not only corrupt but had also betrayed both his party and the people of Ghana.

“If you believe that somebody is corrupt, and I know you’re sitting there, you believe that Ken Ofori-Atta has not been fair to the people of Ghana, including our pensioners. [He] collapsed banks!”

”If Ken Ofori Atta should refuse to come, every measure would be deployed to bring him down to this country. If for any reason he passes on, his dead body would be prosecuted and jailed. And every stolen money belonging to the people of Ghana would be retrieved.’’

He even went further to claim that “90% of NPP ministers believe that Ken Ofori-Atta has cheated them, betrayed their cause.”

Mr. Gbande also asserted that Ofori-Atta used his private companies to benefit from government contracts, highlighting a serious conflict of interest. He dismissed the argument that Ofori-Atta is being unfairly treated, suggesting that his corruption and financial mismanagement justify such scrutiny.

Constitutionalism and Public Interest

On the constitutionality of the operation, Mr. Gbande acknowledged Article 18 of the Ghanaian Constitution, which guarantees protection from unlawful interference in one’s home. However, he argued that the security operation did not violate this provision because it was done for the sake of national security and public interest.

“If you go out and interfere with the livelihood of Ghanaians, don’t you think that you lose that right to protection from the constitution? If the person is harboring documents that will be used to prosecute him and you don’t go and retrieve them, how do you take him to court?”

He defended the role of the security agencies, arguing that they must carry out investigations and arrests before cases can be taken to court. Mr. Gbande also highlighted how similar security actions had been carried out in the past under the NPP government.

“We have been in this country. You remember how they arrested my national chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo? You remember how they invaded even my own home and got it demolished on an ex parte order?”

He dismissed complaints from the NPP regarding the operation at Ofori-Atta’s residence, arguing that they had used similar tactics in the past. He warned that further investigations and revelations about government activities would soon emerge, reinforcing his assertion that Ken Ofori-Atta’s actions were detrimental to the state.

Mr. Gbande concluded his statement with a stern warning to the NPP, emphasizing that investigations into corruption will not cease

“I tell the NPP that they should sit comfortably in their car and tighten their seat belts. The game is yet to begin. And I can assure them that whosoever has stolen money, the security agencies will take them on.”

In his view, the security operation at Ken Ofori-Atta’s residence was necessary, justified, and in line with the broader fight against corruption. His comments reflect the deep political divisions surrounding the former finance minister and the growing tensions in Ghana’s political landscape.
