Tottenham Closing Brentford Boss Thomas Frank as New Head Coach

Tottenham Hotspur are nearing an agreement to appoint Brentford manager Thomas Frank as their new head coach, with talks between the clubs progressing positively. Barring any last-minute complications, the Dane could be confirmed as the new head coach by the weekend.

The negotiations are said to be amicable, with all parties focused on finalizing the move quickly. Discussions have been ongoing this week, and there is now growing confidence that the deal will be completed within the next 48 hours.

Frank, 51, is set to replace Ange Postecoglou, who was dismissed just 16 days after guiding Spurs to their first major trophy in 17 years. This was a Europa League final win that failed to mask a dismal Premier League campaign.

The process of appointing Frank has involved Tottenham’s newly appointed chief executive Vinai Venkatesham, who only began work last Monday. Venkatesham has been working alongside long-standing chairman Daniel Levy to identify and secure the next head coach.

Compensation Agreement in Place

Brentford are entitled to compensation for Frank, who has a contract with the club. According to sources, Tottenham will pay around £10 million to release him, with the amount potentially rising depending on how many members of his backroom staff he decides to bring with him.

Frank is widely known for transforming Brentford into one of the Premier League’s most sustainable and well-run clubs.

He joined the Bees in 2016 as an assistant coach before taking over as head coach in 2018. Under his leadership, Brentford achieved promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-offs in 2021 and have since established themselves as a top-flight club.

The timing of the potential move is significant. Brentford ended the 2024/25 Premier League season in 10th place, while Tottenham slumped to 17th, narrowly avoiding relegation.

Despite winning the Europa League, Spurs endured one of their worst domestic campaigns in recent history, registering just 11 wins in 38 league matches.

Postecoglou’s dismissal stunned many, given the European success, but internal frustrations over the club’s league performance and long-term direction ultimately led to his departure.

A Possible departure For Son

If appointed, Frank will face immediate decisions — none bigger than the future of club captain Son Heung-min. The South Korean forward, a fan favourite and one of the Premier League’s most consistent performers over the past decade, has just one year left on his contract.

Whether Frank chooses to build his project around Son or opts for a broader rebuild could define the direction of Tottenham. In an interview with the Korean news agency, Yonhap, Son said: “I still have one more year left on the contract. Rather than saying anything at this moment, I think we should all wait and see what happens,” he added.

Van De Ven Surprised by Postecoglou’s Dismissal

Spurs defender, Micky van de Ven said he felt it was a strange choice to fire Postecoglou after he led the team to its first trophy in 17 years by winning the Europa League.

The 24-year-old Dutch defender, who was signed by Postecoglou in August 2023, said to Voetbalzone: “I think many of the players got along with him well, and of course he is the first coach who has brought success to Spurs in a long time.

That also shows that he has a certain quality. That also means that he has a winning mentality, 100%. From that, you would of course say that it is strange that he was fired.

“That was ultimately a choice from the club. We will see what happens now. Of course, we see some rumours about the Brentford head coach, who it will probably be.”
