Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has insisted that the demands of Premier League football leave little room for sentiment as he addressed the controversy surrounding teenage forward Max Dowman ahead of Sunday’s trip to Liverpool.
The Gunners travel to Anfield for a crucial league encounter with several selection concerns, but much of Arteta’s pre-match press conference centred on the treatment of Dowman following his sending-off against Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup and the responsibility of protecting the 16-year-old’s development.
Responding to criticism of his reaction to Dowman’s dismissal and the wider debate surrounding the teenager’s involvement in senior football, Arteta stressed that professional football operates in a demanding environment where players must earn their opportunities.
“This is the environment and this is the reality, otherwise we are in Disneyland. We are not in Disneyland, we are in the Premier League and this is the level.”

Arteta Defends Reaction to Dowman’s Dismissal
The Arsenal manager defended his emotional reaction to the incident, explaining that it came from ”frustration” over the circumstances surrounding the youngster’s dismissal and the potential consequences for his development.
Dowman was sent off against Fleetwood after reacting to a series of challenges, prompting Arteta to express his frustration during the incident.

Subsequently, the Arsenal boss faced questions about his reaction, but explained that his relationship with the youngster and conversations before the match influenced how he responded.
Arteta revealed that the dismissal was particularly frustrating because it was not the first time Dowman had experienced similar treatment, pointing to an earlier incident involving England’s Under-19 side this month.
“My reaction comes from a moment of heat and extreme frustration because I know the consequences of that, especially for Max. It is something we discussed just before we went out because it is not the first time it has happened, it happened another time earlier this month with England. And it will continue to happen because of the way he plays and the way he attracts opponents and that’s it.”

He also dismissed suggestions that the incident had damaged his relationship with the youngster, confirming that they had spoken privately and resolved the matter. “There are no issues, we had a talk yesterday and I have done it,” the coach clarified.
Arteta maintained that while Dowman deserves “protection’‘ because of his age, he must also understand the expectations placed on him as a member of Arsenal’s senior squad.
Arsenal Unhappy After Dowman’s Red Card Appeal Fails
Arsenal’s frustration intensified after their appeal against Dowman’s dismissal was rejected, with Arteta questioning the decision and insisting that the teenager was fortunate to escape a more serious injury.
The manager averred that the challenges Dowman received before his reaction deserved greater consideration, describing the punishment as disproportionate to the initial incidents.
“Very disappointed to be fair, especially with the reckless tackles he received. His reaction is minimum in relation to the action. I’m disappointed that it has not been overturned.”

Arteta further suggested that the consequences could have been considerably worse, given the nature of the challenge that preceded the sending-off. “We are lucky today that he hasn’t had a broken foot, that is clear.“
The Arsenal manager also highlighted the physical risks associated with exposing a 16-year-old to the demands of senior football, particularly when opponents are considerably stronger and more physically developed.
He recalled Dowman’s pre-season debut against Newcastle as an example of the physical challenges the youngster must navigate. “If a player that weighs 95kg/100kg comes in at 35kph into Max and hits a bone, I don’t know what happens.”
Arteta insisted that protecting Dowman must remain a collective responsibility while allowing him the opportunity to develop without unnecessary pressure.
“When we talk about protecting him, when you ask me why he’s not playing every week when he’s done really well against Everton, we need to put some perspective into every context into the player that we have which is tremendous and leave it there and let him grow and protect him, all of us.”

Saka Injury Raises Arsenal Selection Concerns
Away from the Dowman controversy, Arteta provided updates on several important players ahead of the trip to Merseyside, with Bukayo Saka’s fitness emerging as a major concern.
The England international is facing a potential spell on the sidelines after suffering an issue that requires further medical assessment.

Arteta confirmed that Saka needed another scan to establish the extent of the injury and determine whether his tendon had been affected. “He needed another scan to see the amount and if the tendon was touched and how badly it was touched and afterwards, we will know more about it.”
Asked whether the winger would be unavailable for England duty, Arteta admitted that it appeared likely but said further information would be required.
Noni Madueke is also a doubt for Sunday’s encounter, with the Arsenal manager waiting to assess his ability to complete a full training session before making a decision.
However, Declan Rice, Riccardo Calafiori and Christos Tzolis have all returned to training and could be available if they complete their preparations without complications.
Liverpool Form Presents Fresh Challenge at Anfield
Arsenal face a Liverpool side that has shown considerable improvement in recent weeks after navigating a demanding run of domestic and European fixtures.
The Reds occupy fourth position in the Premier League with 15 points from eight matches, having recorded four victories, three draws and one defeat.
They are also unbeaten in the Champions League after winning three of their league-phase matches, leaving them third in the standings.

Their recent results include a 1-1 draw against Chelsea, which they won 6-5 on penalties in the League Cup, a 2-0 victory over Brighton and an entertaining 4-3 win against Villarreal. They also defeated Brentford 2-1 and LASK 6-3 before suffering a 3-0 league defeat to Manchester City.
Despite their recent progress, Liverpool face a significant challenge against an Arsenal side seeking to strengthen its position among the title contenders.
The statistics also make Sunday’s encounter particularly intriguing. Liverpool have won just one of their last eight Premier League meetings with Arsenal, drawing five and losing twice. Their only victory in that sequence came in a 1-0 home win last season.
The Merseyside club have also recorded four clean sheets in six Premier League matches since the beginning of September, the highest tally in the division during that period.
Arsenal, meanwhile, are approaching a significant milestone, having recorded 299 away victories in Premier League history. A win at Anfield would make them only the second club to reach 300, after Manchester United.
However, Anfield has historically been an uncomfortable destination for the Gunners, who have won just six of their 34 Premier League visits to the ground, representing an 18 per cent win rate.
With Liverpool seeking to maintain their recent momentum and Arsenal determined to continue their pursuit of the league title, Sunday’s meeting promises a demanding examination for both sides.
