The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has engaged the College of Engineering at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in a high-level strategic meeting focused on innovation, talent development, and sustainable energy growth to deepen academia-industry collaboration and strengthen Ghana’s energy sector.

The meeting, hosted at GNPC’s headquarters in Tema, brought together Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah, Acting Chief Executive Officer of GNPC, and his executive team with Professor Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, Provost of the College of Engineering at KNUST.

The dialogue centered on how structured partnerships can help bridge the gap between academia and industry to prepare students for critical roles in Ghana’s evolving energy landscape.

“At GNPC, we recognize that a successful academia-industry partnership is fundamental to national development.

“We are passionate about investing in initiatives that groom young talent to lead Ghana’s energy future.”

The meeting emphasized GNPC’s commitment not just to funding academic initiatives but to actively supporting experiential learning, knowledge transfer, and practical exposure.

Mr. Amoah noted that real-world exposure, industry mentorship, and joint research are essential to equip graduates with skills that match the fast-changing demands of the energy sector.

Professor Nyarko echoed these sentiments, advocating for a shift from traditional, theory-heavy instruction to an applied, solution-oriented educational model.

“This initiative is not merely about graduating individuals with degrees; it’s about developing professionals who can solve real-world problems. “Industry involvement will be pivotal to achieving this transformation.”

The discussions highlighted the College’s dedication to forging deeper partnerships with stakeholders, with a clear aim: to develop highly skilled professionals ready to seamlessly transition from academia to industry, particularly in the energy sector.

Critically, a shared vision emerged regarding how to best utilize the combined expertise of KNUST and GNPC to drive innovation, bolster capabilities, and ensure sustainable growth within Ghana’s energy sector

The strategic meeting also emphasized aligning academic research with Ghana’s broader energy needs, particularly in the fields of petroleum exploration, gas monetization, renewable energy integration, and carbon reduction.

“We believe research must be directed toward solving Ghana’s most pressing energy challenges.

“GNPC’s field experience can help guide research that has immediate and long-term impact.”

This renewed partnership between GNPC and KNUST represents a significant milestone in Ghana’s journey toward a more resilient and innovative energy sector.

It also reflects a growing recognition that education and industry must move in lockstep to build a future-ready workforce.

“We are creating a platform that fuses innovation, education, and practical experience to ensure Ghana’s energy future is in capable hands.”

Professor Kwabena Biritwum Nyarko, Provost of the College of Engineering at KNUST

As Ghana seeks to accelerate its energy transition and drive industrial growth, partnerships like this will be critical to achieving its economic and climate ambitions.

The collaboration is expected to produce not only skilled professionals but also game-changing research that supports the sustainable use of the country’s energy resources.
